Apple's plans to release next-generation AirPods are not set in stone, but we have a good idea of what features they will have and when we can expect them. Read on for the most up-to-date information.
Apple is rumored to be working on two versions of the fourth-generation AirPods targeting different price points. Currently, there is little difference between the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 beyond their designs, and this is something Apple wants to change in its lineup.
According to well-connected Bloomberg technology reporter Mark Gurman, Apple suppliers will begin production of two new models of fourth-generation AirPods in May 2024.
In a report released in March, Gurman said that he expected both fourth-generation AirPods models to feature a new design with better fit, which is likely to mean a cross between the current AirPods and the AirPods Pro, with slightly shorter stems. Apple is also aiming to introduce improved sound quality, and an updated charging case with a USB-C port.
Of the two models, the higher-end versions are also expected to feature active noise cancellation (ANC) and a speaker in the charging case that can play a sound for Find My location tracking. Currently, ANC and Find My audio support are both features exclusive to Apple's premium second-generation AirPods Pro.
Many of Apple's products now feature Bluetooth 5.3, so the fourth-generation AirPods are highly likely to receive this upgrade. Bluetooth 5.3 offers faster and more reliable connectivity with Bluetooth accessories, as well as improved power efficiency, which can contribute to longer battery life.
Gurman's sources suggest we should see the AirPods 4 late in 2024, which means the earbuds will likely launch in September or October. According to Gurman, Apple plans to discontinue the current second-generation and third-generation AirPods when it launches the two fourth-generation models.
