Apple PowerBook G4
Nick writes "Allrighty: PB G4's, they have caused a lot of talk. Suspicious release-dates, etc...
This is what (I think) I know: The G4 PB's won't be out until first quarter 2001 or even later if there are further problems, with over 500MHZ (probaly 750, but I wanna stick to things I know) and a new UMA-2 Logicboard. Slim, powersaving and lighter. The look won't stay the same, "brushed metal...

Capitol Mac to Host Game Previews
Paulo Rodrigues writes
"Capitol Mac, a local reseller in Richmond, VA, is
hosting its second annual MacGamesDay event.
MacPlay's Jason Whong will be there showing off Sin
and Majesty, both of which are not yet shipping. We'll
have the games on all our computers, and Jason will
host tournaments of both games with prizes to the
winners and free pizza for everyone. This will be the...
Firewire Network
Graham Jones writes "Are you slobbering over the gigabit internet? Do you know that an innovative company is now making a software solution that allows you to hook up multiple computers just by plugging their firewire ports? Voil: 400 Mbps firewire ethernet (actual results are 1.7 to 3 times faster than 100BaseT). You can connect PC's and Macs together this way, and access the same...
My First Cocoa App
Well, I finally decided to sit down with Project Builder
and see if I could come up with something really basic,
really quick. Having always been a big fan of "hacker demos" of olde, I decided
to write a little app that was nothing more than a
shaded, boucing line (my 'hello world' app). So I did, in Objective C, and
used Interface Builder to create a nice looking little
interface...
Carbon Rogue Clone Arrives!!
Juan
Gotoh has released a Carbon version of the
classic and superb game that no one should be
without (especially if you're using a Unix-based OS
such as Apple's latest). That's right...Carbon
Rogue. This basic game has quite a
history, beginning its life in the early 80's as a
shell-based, Unix game (it quickly became a standard
component of BSD Unix v4.2), Rogue has been...
How to Build a Hardware USB Raid (Level 1)
Luis Aynat contacted us recently to inform us that he has just placed a page on-line that explains how to build a hardware USB Raid (level 1) for you Mac from a few easy-to-get parts. Raid level 1 is a mirroring system in which the same data is written to two separate hard drives that, in this case, do not have to be identical in capacity. His goal was to add storage capacity to his iMac and...
"What is Cocoa?"
I recently found an interesting exchange in the comp.sys.mac.programmer.help newsgroup that cast a bit of clarity on an issue that has likely confused many...
A user queried...
As I stated in my last post, I've been out of the Mac loop. Anyhow, I can't
seem to find a straight-up answer to my question: What is Cocoa, and why
should I care/learn its API? Point me in the right direction...
OS X and Classic...with Style
I ran across a pretty nifty gathering of info pointing out a number of ways to tweak (or hack) your OS X setup to make it a bit more...personal. Take a look at The Grand Panjandrum's Mac OS X Public Beta Info & Hacks site. Within, I was specifically inspired by the Getting Most of the Classic Finder Back page, which explains how to get your old Finder's pop-up windows back, among many other...
Mac OS X Dev Tools Released

Timmermann writes "I just noticed that on
Apple's ADC site (
connect.apple.com ), the Mac OS X Dev

available for download. The membership is free to get
a ADC account. "
Excellent. Everybody grab 'em and get your code

Clandestine G4 1GHz Press Release?...Not Quite
raceman59 writes "Unfortunately the leaps forward in G4 microprocessor technology just doesn't seem to be front page news to the rest of the PC world. Motorola's 1GHz G4 press release made the front page on Yahoo's news but was simply bumped for more "interesting" developments (like a phone that doubles as a wrist watch). My Apple brothers, its a sad state of affairs but we are behind the leading...
New G4 Chip Story
Jerry writes "I just read an article on Yahoo news that Motorola had released a 1GHz version of the G4 using the new copper process. Code name Apollo.
Suddenly now, the story has disappeared from Yahoo as if it was a premature release.
Pretty wierd..."...
MacBench 5 vs. New iBook
Dan Knight writes "iBook & PowerBook Page, Hands on the FireWire iBook, Dan Knight
(http://lowendmac.com/ibook/firewireibook.html)
When PowerBook G3 meets Coke, it's time for a new computer. Of course, I couldn't resist benchmarking my wife's new indigo iBook -- and was shocked at the results obtained with MacBench 5, which I'd always considered a pretty good indicator of performance. And, as ...
A Real Taste of (Pre?) Nostalgia
More and more people are starting to collect "vintage" machines (heh...I suppose the passage of time has something to do with that) for a variety of personal reasons. Well...perhaps the ultimate vintage machine is avialable now on eBay. That's right folks, the Apple I:

G4 vs. K7
The technically eloquent folks over at ars technica have posted an excellent article comparing the architecture and performance of the Motorola PowerPC G4 and AMD's K7 processor. Definitely a worth while read.
Take a look: The G4 and the K7: an architectural look at two post-RISC processors...

Using AirPort with the Public Beta
Cloudscout writes "Here's a tidbit gleaned from the Mac Attack forum on the old-school text-based
telnet://atrium.innuendo.com (Atrium BBS) (yes, telnet). It's an imperfect solution to the lack of AirPort support in MacOS X Public Beta, but for those of us who simply can't live without wireless connectivity, it's worth it...

A Good One to Rent!
I was doing a brief Napster and Gnutella music search over my Sunday morning coffee when I came across a couple of songs I'd not thought of in a very long time. I, long ago, wore out the soundtrack (including ELO, Culture Club, Phil Oakley, Human League, Giorgio Moroder) to one of the more corny but, I have to say, superfine movies of the '80's...

Initio Drivers for OS X
This is likely relevant to a few of you out there, anyway. As a very happy user of an Initio Miles UltraWide SCSI board (in my blue&white G3 400 -- ~23MB/sec sustained reads from my Cheetah), I've been frequently contacting Initio in search of drivers for MacOS X PB. (Without the drivers, the board and all devices attached to it cannot be seen by OS X.) Just after Apple started shipping the ...
Collect the NeXT
Little curious tidbit here... I was doing one of my regular NeXT hardware searches on eBay, just to see what's currently out there, when I ran across an interesting tidbit. Apparently USA Weekend (USA Today) listed, in its December 31, 1999 issue, a NeXT computer among the top 26 things to collect for the new millenium.
Sounds good to...
