The new Dynamic Island is arguably one of the iPhone 14 Pro's most interesting features, so with the new iPhones now in the hands of customers, we thought we'd take a deeper look at the Dynamic Island, how it works, and what it does.

During the ‌iPhone 14‌ rumor cycle, we knew that Apple was working on an alternative to the notch that incorporated a pill-shaped cutout and a hole punch cutout for the TrueDepth camera hardware, but what came as a surprise is the clever way that Apple has integrated this new space into the iPhone's interface.

Pixels around the ‌Dynamic Island‌ merge it into one pill-shaped area that changes size and shape to accommodate various types of alerts, notifications, and interactions, turning it into a kind of front-and-center information hub. It can do everything from showing you Maps directions to confirming Apple Pay payments, with a list of some of the possibilities below.

• Expanded into a large rectangle to show upcoming Maps directions without having to open the Maps app.
• Displaying Maps directions in a smaller pill-shaped interface for when you just need a quick glance at the next turn.
• Square shaped for an ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ payment confirmation.
• Showing a music waveform and time remaining on a song that's playing.
• Tracking the time of arrival of a Lyft.
• Displaying privacy indicators when the microphone or camera is in use.
• Displaying a small bar with the phone icon and the length of the phone call.
• Displaying an AirDrop interface when transferring files.
• Showing a timer.
• Keeping track of sports scores.
• Accessing music controls and a music player.
• Showing AirPods connection status and battery life.
• Displaying ‌‌iPhone‌‌ charging status and battery life.
• Low battery alerts.
• Turning the ‌iPhone‌'s silent mode on or off.

The ‌Dynamic Island‌ works with Live Activities, and right now you can test it out with the Timer and with live sports if you happen to be running the iOS 16.1 beta. Live Activities are going to launch in iOS 16.1. Developers can create experiences for the ‌Dynamic Island‌ too, so we can expect to see innovative apps that take advantage of the new interface.

You can interact with content displayed in the ‌Dynamic Island‌ by long pressing to get to a widget for expanded controls, or tapping to go right into the app.

The ‌Dynamic Island‌ is capable of displaying multiple functions at once, and when that happens, it splits into a larger pill-shaped area and a smaller circular area so you can see two things at once. You can swap between them and tap into them like you can with the standard ‌Dynamic Island‌ interface.

Apple is allowing third-party developers to create apps and experiences that take advantage of the new Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max, and developers are already coming up with unique ways to use it.

Kriss Smolka, the developer behind apps like WaterMinder and HabitMinder, today released a game designed for the ‌Dynamic Island‌ called "Hit the Island." In this Pong-style game, the goal is to bounce the ball from the bottom of the iPhone's display up to the ‌Dynamic Island‌ to score a hit.

The free app gives you a point each time you score a hit on the ‌Dynamic Island‌, which reacts and animates when it's struck. As you send the ball careening into the ‌Dynamic Island‌, the game speeds up and you can face multiple balls at one time, or a shrinking paddle.

The game can be downloaded on the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro or Pro Max as of today, and it is also available on other iPhones, with a goal of hitting the notch instead of the ‌Dynamic Island‌.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models feature an upgraded rear camera system that can shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos, which retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility. 48-megapixel ProRAW photos are very large files that clock in at around 75MB each, according to Apple, and sometimes even larger.

Despite these very large image sizes, we have confirmed that the Lightning connector on the iPhone 14 Pro models remains limited to USB 2.0 speeds of up to 480 Mbps like previous models, meaning that transferring full-resolution 48-megapixel ProRAW photos to a Mac or other device with a Lightning cable will take a long time.

Apple recommends using iCloud Photos to access ProRAW files in full resolution on a Mac or other Apple devices, or to transfer the photos off an iPhone wirelessly by using AirDrop, but the Lightning connector certainly remains a bottleneck.

Back in 2015, the original iPad Pro's Lightning connector supported USB 3.0, which was capable of up to 5 Gbps speeds based on the spec at the time, but Apple has evidently chosen not to move in this direction for the iPhone. Fortunately, rumors suggest that all iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port instead of Lightning, which should result in speeds up to 10 Gbps or even up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt 3 support.

iPhone 14 Deals

AT&T

Many of the carrier promotions are the same across the board this year, as they have been in years past, but there are a few exclusives from each company as well. The common discount this year is up to $1,000 off the iPhone 14 when trading in at each carrier, and AT&T is no different. You'll need an eligible trade-in and to buy the iPhone 14 on an installment plan to get this deal.

Specifically, if you trade in a smartphone with a value of $230 or higher, you'll get up to $1,000 in bill credits. If you trade in a smartphone with a value of $130-$229, you'll get up to $800 in bill credits. Lastly, if your trade in is valued between $35-$129, you'll get up to $350 in bill credits.

This is compatible with the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Other stipulations apply as well: in addition to purchasing a qualifying installment agreement, and paying taxes on the full retail price of the iPhone up front, you'll have to pay a $35 activation/upgrade fee.

Verizon

Similarly, Verizon is offering up to $1,000 off iPhone 14 models when you trade in your old smartphone on select Unlimited plans. You can even get an additional $200 credited to your account when you switch to Verizon.

You can also buy one Apple Watch Series 8, and get another one at no cost. If you're buying an iPhone, you can get an iPad for as low as $7/month when placing your order online.

Visible

Verizon-owned carrier Visible is offering two exclusive deals for the launch of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. New members who purchase an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, or iPhone 14 Pro Max, transfer their number from an eligible carrier within 14 days, and complete three months of service payments, can redeem a pair of AirPods 3 for free.

Additionally, if you join Visible and transfer your number from an eligible carrier within 30 days of transaction, you can get a $200 virtual gift card. Anyone with a Visible plan can also add an Apple Watch to their line for $5 per month.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile customers can expect to get up to $1,000 off any iPhone 14 series smartphone when trading in an eligible device. This offer requires new or existing customers to be on the Magenta MAX, Business Unlimited Advanced, Ultimate, or Ultimate+ for iPhone plans.

There are a few other offers as well, including half off the iPhone 14 Pro (or up to $500 off any iPhone 14 device) when trading in an eligible device on most T-Mobile plans. This offer is for any customer not on the aforementioned four cellular plans.

If you need to buy two iPhone 14s, T-Mobile is also planning a BOGO deal where you can buy one iPhone 14 family device and get a second one for up to $700 off. This is also available on most T-Mobile plans and will require you to add a second line on an existing plan.

For Apple Watch users, if you buy an Apple Watch you'll get $200 off a second model when adding a new watch line on your plan.

The first beta of iOS 16.1 seeded to developers and public testers earlier this week enables Reachability support for the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, making the new pill-shaped area easier to access with one hand.

Twitter account Tech-Up shared a first look at how Dynamic Island works with Reachability on the iOS 16.1 beta, as spotted by 9to5Mac.

Reachability is an optional feature that lowers the top half of the screen so it's within easy reach of your fingers. The feature can be enabled in the Settings app under Accessibility → Touch → Reachability. To use the feature, simply swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen. To return to a regular view, tap the upper half of the screen.

On earlier versions of iOS 16, the Dynamic Island does not work with Reachability and remains at the top of the screen while other content is lowered.

Dynamic Island can display system alerts for incoming phone calls, AirPods connected, Face ID, Apple Pay, AirDrop, AirPlay, car keys in the Wallet app, unlocking the iPhone with an Apple Watch, charging and low battery indicators, ring/silent mode, NFC interactions, Focus mode changes, Shortcuts, Airplane Mode, Find My, and more. It will also work with Live Activities in third-party apps when iOS 16.1 is released later this year.

Apple is repeatedly depicting the iPhone 14 Pro's rumored "pill and hole-punch" display cutout design with no Dynamic Island, despite this not being an option on the device.

In a new support document titled "Use Always-On display with your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max" that was published yesterday, Apple clearly shows the device's two display cutouts with usable display area between them and no ‌Dynamic Island‌. This is at least the third time that the design as been spotted coming out of official Apple sources.

Evidence of Apple explicitly using the rumored "pill and hole-punch" design was first spotted in the initial graphics that were posted on Apple's website following its "Far out" event. Shortly after, Apple posted developer resources for the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro showing the display cutouts alone, before reuploading the resources correctly showing the ‌Dynamic Island‌.

The repeated error is curious given that there is currently no way to disable the ‌Dynamic Island‌ and allow content between the two display cutouts to appear normally. The graphics are also striking given that for much of the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro's rumor cycle, the device was expected to look exactly like this. Rumors of the Dynamic Island and the two display cutouts appearing as a single "pill" thanks to software enhancements only emerged a week before the Apple event.

The blunders could indicate that the ‌Dynamic Island‌ was intended to be an optional feature or was even a fairly late-stage decision in the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro's development. It seems most likely that due to the siloed nature of Apple's internal structure, employees responsible for web design, developer resources, and support documents were unaware of the ‌Dynamic Island‌ until directly before the Apple event.

When information about the ‌Dynamic Island‌ solidified, it was assumed that prior rumors proclaiming a design with two visible display cutouts were derived simply from hardware leaks, with software still being heavily locked down. Apple's repeated illustration of the rumored design suggests that the initial understanding of how the display cutouts would look may have been more official than previously thought.

Update: As with the other instances, Apple has corrected the image in the latest support document to display the ‌Dynamic Island‌ rather than separate cutouts.

Earlier this month, Apple's CEO Tim Cook, former Apple design chief Jony Ive, and Emerson Collective founder Laurene Powell Jobs participated in a panel at Kara Swisher's final Code Conference, where they discussed Steve Jobs and a wide range of other topics.

For the first time since that conference, the full video of the hour-plus-long discussion has been shared on YouTube. During the panel, the trio talked at length about Steve Jobs and his impact on Apple and the world. Laurene Powell Jobs reflected on Jobs and what his thoughts would have been on the current state of the world.

He loved California so much, but he loved our country. He loved the idea of America. He loved what it allowed the individual and the communities to become. He loved the unfetteredness of it. He loved the personal freedoms and liberties, but also the connectedness and responsibility for each other.

During the conference, Cook, Ive, and Powell Jobs launched the Steve Jobs Archive, a new website dedicated fully to Jobs. The website includes videos, emails, and audio clips from Jobs that people may have never seen before.

In an email Jobs sent to himself on Thursday, September 2, 2010, shared on the website, he said, "When I needed medical attention, I was helpless to help myself survive," and "I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well being."

Another notable tidbit from the discussion included Cook addressing why Apple has not yet adopted support for RCS messaging on iOS. In response to a reporter complaining about their difficulties messaging with their mother since she has an Android device, Cook quipped, "buy your mom an iPhone." Following the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 8 and second-generation Apple Watch SE, Apple has made the Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop bands available in smaller Size 1 through Size 3 options for all 44mm and 45mm Apple Watch models.

44mm and 45mm Apple Watch models include the Series 8, Series 7, Series 6, and both generations of the Apple Watch SE.

Previously, the Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop were only available in Size 4 through Size 12 for 44mm and 45mm Apple Watch models, but now customers who purchase a larger Apple Watch but have a smaller wrist have more suitable band sizes to choose from. Size 9 through Size 12 are still not an option for 40mm and 41mm Apple Watch models.

Solo Loops and Braided Solo Loops are priced at $49 and $99, respectively. Both bands feature a stretchable design without a clasp for a more precise fit.

The iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max feature 6GB of faster RAM, which helps make overall device performance faster and more efficient compared to last year's iPhone 13 Pro.

Earlier today, a teardown of the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro revealed it features Qualcomm's X65 5G modem, offering faster 5G speeds and lower energy consumption.

That same teardown also confirmed that the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max feature the newer and faster type of LPDDR5 RAM compared to the LPDDR4X memory in the previous ‌iPhone‌ 13 Pro. Like the ‌iPhone‌ 13 Pro last year, the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro still features the same 6GB capacity of RAM but benefits from the newer LPDDR5 memory type.

The standard ‌iPhone 14‌ and ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus, as rumored, are expected to still be featuring LPDDR4X memory alongside the A15 Bionic chip from last year's high-end iPhones. According to Apple, the A16 Bionic in the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro features 50% more memory bandwidth, which is in line with the expected increase from moving to LPDDR5 memory. The ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max feature the new A16 Bionic chip that Apple says is the "fastest chip ever in a smartphone."

Apple's newly launched iPhone 14 models include a new Action mode when recording video. Here's everything you need to know about the feature to start taking advantage of it.

What is Action Mode?

In a nutshell, the new Action mode has been designed by Apple to help capture smooth-looking video that adjusts to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations, even when video is being captured in the middle of the action.

According to Apple, it uses the full camera sensor with more overscan and advanced roll correction to achieve this effect.

The feature is built into the iPhone's stock Camera app, and when enabled, should allow you to capture video that looks almost as if you were using a gimbal to do so. Action mode can record in up to 2.8K at 60 fps, and it supports Dolby Vision HDR, ensuring very good video quality.

Which iPhone Models Support Action Mode?

You don't even need a Pro device to make use of the feature, since all ‌iPhone 14‌ models support Action mode out of the box, including ‌iPhone 14‌, ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus, ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro, and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max. Here's how to start capturing video with it.

How to Use Action Mode When Shooting Video

1. Launch the Camera app on your ‌iPhone‌.
2. Swipe the camera mode menu so that "Video" is highlighted.
   
   

3. Tap the Action mode button (it looks like a person running) above the viewfinder so that the icon turns yellow.
4. When you're ready to start recording, tap the red Record button.
   

And that's it. Just toggle it on like so, for great-looking video without having to carry stabilizing equipment like a gimbal.

We managed to pick up an ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and thought we'd show it off for MacRumors readers awaiting their deliveries or still trying to decide on a purchase.

First and foremost, the Dynamic Island is one of the most interesting new ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro features because it's a clever redesign that turns the TrueDepth system hardware into part of the user interface. Right out of the box, the ‌Dynamic Island‌ works well, and it's going to change the way we view information and interact with our iPhones.

The ‌Dynamic Island‌ changes shape and function for alerts like incoming phone calls, AirPods being connected, Face ID, Apple Pay, charging, when the camera is in use, when music is playing, and tons more. It does a lot, and since it's front and center, it feels like a more seamless and integrated notification experience.

Apple also introduced always-on display technology, which is a notable change and brings the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models in line with the Apple Watch. The always-on display is just a dimmer version of your Lock Screen with no additional customization options, so you can see the time, your widgets, and a darkened version of your wallpaper even when the ‌iPhone‌'s display isn't in active use. Always-on display uses a new 1Hz refresh rate to preserve battery life, but reviews so far have suggested that you might see a bit of battery drain using it. We're going to test that out next week.

There's a new 48-megapixel camera in the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro, which also has an updated sensor that lets in more light, along with the "Photonic Engine" software optimizations that further improve low-light photography. Images of course look fantastic, but we will be doing a deeper dive into the camera to really dig into the differences between the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and ‌iPhone‌ 13 Pro models.

You'll notice the low-light photography improvements, and with close-up photos, you can see more natural bokeh even when not using Portrait Mode.

By default, Apple is using pixel binning to combine the data from four pixels into one for a 12-megapixel photo from the 48-megapixel lens, but you can take full 48-megapixel RAW images. With this option, you can crop in a decent bit, and Apple has also used it to provide a 2x zoom option that's available alongside the 3x zoom from the telephoto. 2x zoom is nicer for portraits, so it's great to have options.

For video, there's an Action mode that makes action sequences smoother and gets rid of camera shake, mimicking what you might get when you use a gimbal. Action mode works at up to 2.8K resolution, and outside of Action mode, you've got 4K video available at 60, 30, and 24 fps. Unfortunately, we never got that rumored 8K video option.

Moving on to the A16, the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models are the only ones to get an updated chip this year. The A16 is the first chip built on TSMC's 4-nanometer process, an upgrade over the 5-nanometer process. The smaller node basically means the chips are faster and more efficient. The A15 was already blazing fast so you might not see notable changes in day to day use, and on benchmarks, we can see differences in CPU and GPU performance, but it's not a drastic upgrade.

We weren't able to test Crash Detection or Emergency SOS via satellite in time for this video, but these are two safety features that make the ‌iPhone‌ more valuable than ever in an emergency situation, and we'll check them out in more detail at a later date.

Note that most of the features with the exception of Crash Detection and satellite connectivity are limited to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models and are not available on the ‌iPhone 14‌ or ‌iPhone 14‌ Plus.

iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are beginning to arrive to customers around the world after pre-orders began on Friday, September 9. For customers who forgot to pre-order one of the Pro models or simply decided to wait, most configurations are now estimated for delivery in October, but the good news is that same-day or next-day pickup is now an option at select Apple Store locations around the world.

Apple's online store in the United States, for example, shows a variety of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max configurations available for pickup between today and Sunday, but availability varies by state. Some models are similarly available for Apple Store pickup today or tomorrow in countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom.

To order a product with Apple Store pickup, add the product to your bag on Apple.com or in the Apple Store app, proceed to checkout, select the "I'll pick it up" option, enter your ZIP or postal code, choose an available Apple Store location, select a pickup date, and select a 15-minute check-in window. Payment is completed online, and a valid government-issued photo ID and the order number may be required upon pickup.

iPhone 14 Pro models may also be available for walk-in customers at Apple Store locations with enough inventory, but your mileage may vary. Walk-in customers may be placed into a separate queue with lower priority upon arrival to the store.

Update: Inventory is now sold out or depleted in many locations.

Apple today published a new support document with additional details about the new wrist temperature sensing feature available on Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra models, and it turns out the feature requires users to wear their watch for five nights before it can detect a baseline temperature.

Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra have two temperature sensors — one on the back crystal, near your skin, and another just under the display. While the wearer sleeps, Apple Watch samples wrist temperature every five seconds. This design improves accuracy by reducing bias from the outside environment, according to Apple.

Your body temperature naturally fluctuates and can vary each night due to your diet and exercise, alcohol consumption, sleep environment, or physiological factors such as menstrual cycles and illness. After about 5 nights, your Apple Watch will determine your baseline wrist temperature and look for nightly changes to it.

Apple says that Sleep must be set up with "Track Sleep with Apple Watch" enabled, and Sleep Focus must be enabled for at least four hours a night for about five nights. After that, users can check Body Measurements -> Wrist Temperature in the Health app for recorded measurements.

Apple cautions that the feature isn't a medical-grade device and shouldn't be used for any medical purpose, nor is it a thermometer, and it cannot provide measurements on demand. A loose-fitting Apple Watch can also impact wrist temperature data.

Apple is marketing the feature in promotional materials for the new Apple Watch models as a way to improve period predictions and retrospective ovulation estimates, but the support document suggests that tracking nightly temperature changes while sleeping can give anyone insight into their "overall well-being."

For those who have no use for the feature, Wrist Temperature can be turned off in the Watch app on iPhone, under Privacy -> Turn off Wrist Temperature.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 modem for faster 5G speeds, lower power consumption, and improved mmWave support on U.S. models, according to a teardown of the devices shared on YouTube today.

The X65 chip can be seen on the logic board in a teardown of the iPhone 14 Pro. We're still in the process of confirming whether the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also have the X65, but all models within a series typically share the same modem.

Qualcomm announced the X65 modem in February 2021 with power efficiency improvements, resulting in improved battery life while using 5G. In addition, the X65 modem is the world's first 10 Gigabit 5G modem and antenna system for smartphones, enabling theoretical data speeds up to 10 gigabits per second. In May 2021, Qualcomm updated its X65 Snapdragon modem with wider mmWave spectrum support.

The power efficiency improvements of both the X65 modem and A16 Bionic chip contribute to longer battery life on iPhone 14 Pro models. A battery test earlier this week claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted two hours longer than the iPhone 13 Pro Max from last year. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are now starting to arrive to customers.

Apple Watch owners who stream music from Spotify have been urged not to update their devices to watchOS 9 because of a bug that causes streaming on the watch to stop working.

Spotify has been sending its users emails warning of the problem, which began to emerge soon after Apple released watchOS 9 to the public on Monday. The message from the company reads:

Apple WatchOS 9 introduced a bug that causes Spotify streaming on the Apple Watch to stop working. We urge Spotify Apple Watch users not to install the WatchOS 9 update until Apple has implemented a fix for the issue. Users who are already affected can instead download their content to their Apple Watch and listen offline or stream from their phones.

According to user reports, streaming on Apple Watch stops working within the first minute, and yet the track progress bar continues to move, just minus audio. The problem occurs on both Wi-Fi and cellular connection, but there is no issue with Spotify media downloaded to Apple Watch.

Apple seeded the first beta of watchOS 9.1 to developers on Wednesday, and there are unverified reports that the point release fixes the Spotify streaming problem. However, Apple does not mention the issue in its release notes so users won't know for sure until Apple rolls out the next Apple Watch update to the public.

According to Apple, some people with new ‌iPhone 14‌ models may be facing iMessage and ‌FaceTime‌ activation issues after setting up their phone. Some of the problems encountered may include:

• Inability to receive iMessages or ‌FaceTime‌ calls.
• Seeing a green message bubble instead of a blue bubble when sending a message to another Apple device.
• Conversations in Messages showing up in two separate threads instead of one.
• Recipients seeing your messages coming from the wrong account, for example from your email address if you had selected your phone number.

Update Your iPhone 14 Software

Apple says the simplest way to resolve these issues is to update your ‌iPhone 14‌ to iOS 16.0.1. The update is now available for all ‌iPhone 14‌ models. To update your device, follow these steps. If you get a notification on your device that says an update is available, tap Install Now. You can also follow these steps:

1. Plug your device into a power outlet using a Lightning cable and power plug, and make sure you're connected to a Wi-Fi network.
2. Launch the Settings app.
3. Tap General, then tap Software Update.
   

4. Tap Download and Install.
5. Enter your passcode if prompted to do so.

If You're Still Having Issues After Updating

If after updating to iOS 16.0.1 you are still experiencing problems, here are a few other steps you can try that may resolve things.

1. In the Settings app, tap Cellular/Mobile Data. Make sure that your phone line is turned on. If you use multiple SIMs, make sure that the phone number you want to use is selected and turned on.
2. Go to Settings -> Messages, then tap Send & Receive.
3. Tap the phone number that you want to use with Messages.
4. Go Back to the main Settings menu, then tap FaceTime.
5. Tap the phone number that you want to use with ‌FaceTime‌.

If none of the above works, you may need to restore your device to iOS 16.0.1 by connecting to a Mac or PC to fix the bug and fully activate your new iPhone.
