Apple is not currently planning to purchase Premier League club Manchester United, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Manchester United flag
A report earlier today from British tabloid The Daily Star claimed that Apple had expressed an interest in buying Manchester United for around $7 billion, but our source with direct knowledge of the situation said the report is false.

Manchester United has been majority owned by the Glazer family since 2005. The club announced on Tuesday that its board planned to "explore strategic alternatives," including a potential sale of the club. The news came on the same day that Manchester United announced that star player Cristiano Ronaldo would be leaving the club.

While it has no plans to buy Manchester United, Apple has been pushing into sports content. The company partnered with the MLB to air a weekly "Friday Night Baseball" doubleheader on Apple TV+ during the 2022 regular season, and it will be the exclusive provider of MLS games for the next 10 years. Apple is reportedly also considered a frontrunner for streaming rights to the NFL's Sunday Ticket package starting next season.

Apple planned to introduce a new $49 Apple Pencil this year that was compatible with iPhones, but scrapped the plans at the last minute, claims a sketchy new rumor coming out of Asia.

apple pencil red
According to a Weibo post, shared on Twitter by DuanRui, Apple allegedly intended to release the new ‌Apple Pencil‌, codenamed "Maker" (or, more likely, "Marker") at its September 2022 event, and even went so far as to mass produce over one million units of the accessory, only to can its launch at the eleventh hour for unspecified reasons.

To cut costs, the device allegedly lacked pressure sensing technology or a rechargeable battery, and instead utilized an onboard chip to power the stylus through the iPad or iPhone screen, similar to how Samsung's S-Pen stylus works.

At $49, the unreleased ‌Apple Pencil‌ would have been significantly cheaper than the first-generation and second-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌ models, which are priced at $99 and $129, respectively.

Unfortunately, the source of the ‌Apple Pencil‌ rumor has no track record, so the claims need to be taken with a large pinch of salt. Furthermore, this isn't the first time we've heard rumors of an Apple Pencil being developed to work with iPhones, none of which have come to fruition.

Still, a battery-less ‌Apple Pencil‌ would pair well with the latest tenth-generation ‌iPad‌, which comes with a USB-C port and requires an ungainly $9 Lightning dongle to work with the first-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌. Again though, why Apple would kill plans for an accessory that had entered mass production is unclear.

If it really was a thing, and so many units were manufactured by Apple, then past history would suggest some units will eventually be leaked. Would you welcome an ‌Apple Pencil‌ for ‌iPhone‌? Let us know in the comments.

HBO is working on a fix for "can't play title" errors that some users have been encountering in the HBO Max app for Apple TV, according to The Verge.

hbo max apple tv shadow
The issue, which has been widely reported by users, appears to occur on all generations of ‌Apple TV‌ 4K running tvOS 16.1 and the latest HBO Max app version 52.50.1, released November 16.

While some users have found the problem to be intermittent, others are unable to stream content at all without encountering the playback errors, although some have found workarounds that include force quitting the app, logging out of the app, reinstalling it, or restarting their ‌Apple TV‌.

HBO's SVP of communications Chris Willard told The Verge that they are aware of the issues and working on a fix that will be included in an upcoming update to the app.

Until then, two temporary troubleshooting tips suggested by HBO Max customer support include turning off HDR support (in Settings -> Video and Audio, change the Format to SDR, and disable Match Content, Match Dynamic Range, and Match Frame Rate options) and changing the resolution from 4K to 1080p or 720p.

With the holiday season approaching, many people will be spending lots of time with family and friends. We thought we'd create a handy list of Apple TV+ shows and movies that are suitable for watching with family members young and old, and that are great to catch up on if you have some extra time in the coming weeks.

apple tv plus banner

Spirited

Starring well-known comedians Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, "Spirited" is the perfect holiday movie. A retelling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, "Spirited" will see several Christmas ghosts visiting miser Ryan Reynolds, who plays the movie's Scrooge.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

If you're a fan of Charlie Brown, you won't want to miss out on A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, which is streaming on ‌Apple TV‌+. In this classic, Peppermint Patty invites everyone over to Charlie Brown's for Thanksgiving, and Snoopy cooks a holiday meal.

Ted Lasso

If you're not caught up on "Ted Lasso," or have a family member who isn't, it's a heartwarming show that never fails to please. It's worth a watch or a rewatch to see Jason Sudeikis step into the role of football coach Ted Lasso. There are two full seasons available, so it's a great binge watch.

Mythic Quest

From the creators of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Mythic Quest" is a comedy series about a game studio that produces a popular online game. Starring Rob McElhenney, David Hornsby, Charlotte Nicdao, and Danny Pudi, this show is funny even if you're not a gamer, and if you are, it's hilarious.

There are three seasons available, with season three new as of just a couple weeks ago.

Loot

In "Loot," Maya Rudolph plays a clueless billionaire who divorces her cheating husband, ultimately engaging with her charitable foundation and reconnecting with the real world. "Loot" is charming and funny, and it's a quick watch with episodes that are less than 30 minutes long.

Trying

British TV show "Trying" stars Rafe Spell and Esther Smith as a couple who are dying to have children. They bumble their way through prospective parenthood, and it's hard not to love this show because of the chemistry between the main characters.

Schmigadoon

A musical comedy, "Schmigadoon" stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michal Key as an on-the-rocks couple stuck in the magical singing and dancing town of Schmigadoon. The only way out is finding true love.

The After Party

A fun whodunnit, "The After Party" features a group of classmates being investigated for murder after one of them is found dead. It's a mystery you get to figure out along with the detective, and the ending is a surprise. With most episodes not longer than 40 minutes, this is a quick watch.

Long Way Up

"Long Way Up" is an easy to watch show featuring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman riding their motorcycles to visit beautiful places across South and Central America. There are also two older shows in the same series that are binge worthy, including "Long Way Round" and "Long Way Down."

CODA

"CODA" is a coming-of-age story about the child of two deaf adults and her struggle between living her life and taking care of her family. CODA won an Academy Award for Best Picture, and it's well worth watching if you haven't yet seen it.

For After the Kids Are in Bed

There are a number of more serious, dramatic shows and movies on ‌Apple TV‌ that are worth watching, but these aren't suitable for kids or for a lighthearted gathering.

  • Severance - A TV show where workers have their minds severed so their work persona doesn't know anything about their home persona, and vice versa.
  • Emancipation - A film starring Will Smith as a slave who risks his life to escape.
  • Black Bird - A fantastic limited series where drug dealer Jimmy Keene is given the option for a reduced sentence if he can befriend a brutal serial killer.
  • The Morning Show - A morning news team that deals with all kinds of drama, starting with the Me Too movement.
  • Servant - A spooky but slow TV series that unravels a mystery over several seasons.
  • Physical - Rose Byrne plays an exercise-obsessed working mom with body issues in "Physical."
  • Calls - If you're in the mood for something scary and original, "Calls" is an audio-only TV series that uses audio with limited visuals to tell an engrossing story.

Apple supplier Cirrus Logic may have vaguely hinted at iPhone 15 Pro models getting haptic buttons next year, according to research firm Barclays.

iPhone 14 Pro Purple Side Perspective Feature Purple
In a letter to shareholders this month, the Texas-based semiconductor company said it continues to "engage with a strategic customer" and expects to "bring a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year." HPMS refers to Cirrus Logic's high-performance mixed-signal chips, which includes haptic drivers for the Taptic Engine in iPhones.

On an earnings call with analysts this month, Cirrus Logic CEO John Forsyth narrowed down the timeframe for this new component coming to market to the "back half of next year," which would line up with iPhone 15 Pro models launching next September.

In an investor note last week, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley said the new component that Cirrus Logic mentioned will most likely be part of additional Taptic Engines for the haptic buttons on iPhone 15 Pro models:

The biggest change to our thinking here is to model $1 of new content in the IP15 Pro models. To be clear, the company hasn't said much here other than that the chip is mixed signal and not in the power domain. When looking at potential use cases, the largest change in new iPhone models next year is the removal of the buttons, which would require additional drivers for the haptics engine, making it the most likely use case for new content.

In October, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said iPhone 15 Pro models will feature solid-state volume and power buttons. Kuo said the devices will be equipped with two additional Taptic Engines that provide haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of pressing the buttons, without them physically moving, similar to the Home button on recent iPhone SE models or the Force Touch trackpad on newer MacBooks.

Haptic buttons on iPhones could allow for even better water resistance and would eliminate moving parts that can wear out or break over time. However, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are still expected to have mechanical buttons.

Apple is close to a deal for the book rights to Michael Lewis' story about the fall of entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried and his cryptocurrency trading platform FTX, reports Deadline.

The author of Moneyball, The Big Short, and The Blind Side spent six months will Bankman-Fried before his crypto exchange collapsed earlier this month. Bankman-Fried resigned as CEO of FTX, which was once understood to be worth up to $26 billion before it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, amid allegations of fraud and mishandled customer funds.

With the story expected to be turned into a feature film, Deadline's sources peg the deal at mid-seven figures. If Apple successfully closes, the report suggests it will have beaten competition from the likes of Amazon and Netflix.

Lewis' book will attempt to explain the fall of Bankman-Fried's crypto empire, which forced him to put up his Bahamas resort up for sale. He and FTX are now under investigation in the U.S. and other countries for possible securities violations. FTX's implosion has also seen celebrities Tom Brady and Larry David being sued for their part in its promotion.

Riots broke out on Wednesday at the world's largest iPhone factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, according to video shared on social media.

foxconn
Footage widely circulated online shows hundreds of Foxconn workers marching in protest, clashing with police and some being confronted by people in hazmat suits.

Some video captured workers complaining about the food they had been provided, with others protesting that they had not been paid bonuses as promised.

The Zhengzhou plant is Foxconn's biggest ‌iPhone‌ factory with around 200,000 workers. Foxconn is responsible for assembling around 70 percent of the iPhones that Apple sells, and it has been struggling to keep employees on site due to COVID lockdowns.

China's zero-COVID policy requires cities to quickly quell outbreaks through restrictions, and with COVID spreading in Zhengzhou, workers have wanted to return home to avoid being stuck at the factory should there be a more stringent lockdown.

Workers have also been unhappy with restrictions at the factory, such as the closure of the dine-in cafeteria, and a shortage of supplies that caused a panic.

Employee issues at the Zhengzhou plant could cause ‌‌iPhone‌‌ output to fall as much as 30 percent. Foxconn has attempted to mitigate the supply issues by offering bonuses and ramping up production at another factory in Shenzhen, but workers at the Zhengzhou plant have accused Foxconn of not living up to contract agreements.

"They changed the contract so that we could not get the subsidy as they had promised. They quarantine us but don't provide food," said one Foxconn worker on video shared online. "If they do not address our needs, we will keep fighting."

Update 11/24: Foxconn has apologized for a pay-related "technical error" when hiring new recruits at its ‌iPhone‌ factory in China. "We apologize for an input error in the computer system and guarantee that the actual pay is the same as agreed and the official recruitment posters."

The company is communicating with employees still engaged in smaller protests, a Foxconn source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. Apple said it had staff at the factory and was "working closely with Foxconn to ensure their employees' concerns are addressed."
