Isis, the mobile wallet venture that has been backed by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless, has announced that it will initiate a national rollout of service this year and will include support for Apple’s iPhone, as reported by Bloomberg.

isis_payments

“What you’ll see coming from us is a vastly improved product, a variety of new places to use it, a vastly improved user experience,” Ryan Hughes, chief marketing officer at New York-based Isis, said in an interview.

Prior to this announcement, Isis had begun testing its services at 4,000 locations in Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah. Isis CEO Ryan Hughes revealed that in these tests, Isis users made payments with the phone more than ten times a month on average, and claimed that two-thirds of users in the test program opted to receive advertisements and offers from their favorite brands. This form of advertising would be something that carriers would use to capture new forms of revenue as the number of new smartphone customers grow.

Transactions using near-field communication (NFC) technology are expected to hit $110 billion by 2017, and has been included with many phones that run Google’s Android platform like the Samsung Galaxy S4, and phones that run Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, such as the Nokia Lumia 925. Apple’s iPhone does not currently have NFC capabilities, but the company has been rumored to integrate the technology with the potential launch of the iPhone 5S in the Fall.

Microsoft filed its annual Form 10-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) today, revealing that the Microsoft Surface lineup has garnered only $853 million in revenue for the company, which is less than the recent $900 million writedown the company took for the Surface RT.

And as GeekWire notes, it's also less than the "$898 million increase in advertising costs associated primarily with Windows 8 and Surface.” The numbers account for all Surfaces sold from the device's original fall launch until the end of Microsoft's fiscal year on June 30.

surfacert
While Microsoft did not reveal how many Surface units it sold, GeekWire does estimate that it sold approximately 1.7 million units by the end of June, which roughly corroborates a Bloomberg report in March claiming that Microsoft had sold 1.5 million Surface devices.

As The Loop's Jim Dalrymple points out, Microsoft has sold 1.7 million Surface units in 8 months, which is a far cry from the 3 million iPads Apple sold in 3 days last November, the 14.6 million iPads it sold last quarter and the 57 million iPads Apple sold since the Surface launched.

Late last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told employees at an internal Microsoft town hall meeting that the company had "built more devices than [Microsoft] could sell" in reference to slowing Surface sales. Recently, Microsoft has been trying to sell more devices by aggressively marketing the Surface RT as an iPad competitor with negative ads and was forced to drop the price of its Surface RT prices by $150.

Despite the slow sales of the Surface tablets, Microsoft is said to be pushing forward with plans for a second generation tablet.

A new support document has emerged on Apple's website today, revealing a way for iMessage users to report unwanted messages, or spam, directly to Apple.

To report unwanted iMessage messages to Apple, please send an email with the following details to: imessage.spam@icloud.com

Include a screenshot of the message you have received.
Include the full email address or phone number you received the unwanted message from.
Include the date and time that you received the message.

In late March it was reported that a group of iOS developers had been hit with denial-of-service attacks via iMessage that saw them receiving a series of rapid-fire messages. Previously, it was not possible for users to take action against possible spam attacks. Now users can alert Apple to any possible problems directly.

imessage_ipad_mac_iphone
Similarly, users with iOS 7 wanting to fight potential spam will have the ability to block contacts in the Messages, Phone and FaceTime apps, but users with previous versions of iOS will not be able to use that feature.

Late last week Apple commercials from the 1980s began resurfacing on YouTube channel EveryAppleAds, offering an extensive look at Apple advertising during that time period. Now, the same YouTube channel has uploaded a video of late film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert reviewing similar ads.

The video appears to have been recorded at a special Apple event in 1986, as indicated by the Apple podium that Siskel stands behind. The two famous critics use the format of their then-popular film review show "Siskel & Ebert At The Movies", minus the "Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down" rating system, to critique some of Apple's mid-80s commercials.

Siskel was particularly impressed with the ads, noting that while he usually only likes one out of every three films he sees, he liked all five of the Apple commercials.

"And in sum, this is one of the more impressive series of commercials I've seen and I've seen a lot. Especially, I think, it's an impressive series if you run just the ones that we've picked. In fact, they're so good they're almost good enough to make me, a movie critic, want to watch prime time TV in order to see them again. Almost."

Additional vintage ads, including the ones Siskel and Ebert reviewed, can be found on EveryAppleAds' YouTube channel.

Apple is set to open a new retail location in Rimini, Italy this Saturday, on August 3. The store is located in the largest shopping mall in the Emilia-Romagna region, Le Befane, which includes more than 130 different retail shops and restaurants. Though Apple has 12 stores spread across the country, the Le Befane location will be the first in Rimini.

riministore
The location is reportedly quite large, spanning approximately 1,000 square meters between both the warehouse and retail space.

At store openings, Apple typically hands out commemorative T-shirts to the first 1,000 customers to visit. The Rimini Apple Store is set to open at 9 a.m. this Saturday, and Apple has already begun accepting reservations for workshops and Genius Bar appointments.

Larry Gadea, a user on the Tech Inferno forums, has shown off a unique setup whereby he connects a graphics card to the 11" MacBook Air via a series of adapters.

He uses a Thunderbolt to Express Card adapter, then connects an ExpressCard to PCI-Express adapter, and finally to a Windows-compatible video card. The final result is somewhat bulky but seems to provide an excellent gaming experience.

Macbookairwthunderboltgpu

It has become very clear that gaming is not only high-performance, but super practical on an 11" Macbook Air. There's so much going against it: this hodgepodge of adapters, it has a low voltage CPU, disaster of wiring and exposed sensitive parts, crazy boot-time chainloading software, Intel killing companies producing adapters and products left right and center via legal threats, etc. but somehow, with the right parts and some patience, it works spectacularly. And is quite cheap too!

The full article goes deep into frame rates and benchmarking a variety of games, noting that -- though users need to use Boot Camp to run Windows because of graphics card driver requirements -- advanced PC gaming on the MacBook Air is workable with a little technical know-how.

Because his setup can be easily unplugged, it is especially useful for gamers who want to play games on a desktop-screen but still have a lightweight notebook for traveling. It could also conceivably be used on other Thunderbolt-equipped Macs, including the iMac and the upcoming Mac Pro.

Amazon has updated its Kindle app for iOS to version 3.9, adding a feature that allows users to search for book samples using the app's existing Library Search tool.

Rather than simply searching through a user's library, the app now searches through Amazon's entire catalog of books and brings up samples that can be downloaded directly within the app.

kindle1
Though users can download in-app book samples to read, ebooks are still unable to be purchased within the app. While the Kindle app used to include a link that directed users to the Kindle Store for purchases, Amazon was forced to remove the feature two years ago when Apple implemented new In-App subscription rules that barred links to third party web stores.

All Kindle purchases are still required to be made outside of the Kindle app, but the availability of sample books is a welcome perk for regular Kindle users.

When a sample book has been read, instead of directing users to the Amazon website to purchase the book, the app sends an email with a link to the Kindle Store, allowing the company to skirt Apple's rules while directing traffic to the Amazon site. Amazon also recommends similar books, offering a wishlist, another sample, or an e-mail about the recommendation.

kindle2
In addition to offering sample downloads, the newest version of the Amazon app for iOS also allows customers to import and use previously purchased dictionaries and it includes an accessibility quick reference guide along with both bug fixes and performance enhancements.

As Apple continues to bring its Developer Center back online after a week-long outage, the company is sending out emails to developers noting a potential delay for app reviews. ReadWrite has posted one of the letters being received by developers:

"We are currently reviewing an app that you submitted for inclusion on the App Store, and want to let you know that the review process will require additional time. We apologize for the delay and will provide you with an update on the status of your app as soon as possible."

Such letters are not uncommon, of course, but given the amount of time that the Developer Center was offline, it makes sense that Apple would have a backlog of reviews to work through. While app updates were available, new apps were not able to be submitted to Apple during the outage.

According to one developer, he received the email after waiting six days for a review and after waiting another five days, his app has yet to be approved. It is unknown, however, whether or not there is a secondary issue with his app, as other developers have had apps approved at a more rapid pace.

devstatus
Apple’s Developer Center first went offline on Thursday, July 18, and several days later, Apple announced that the outage was the result of a security breach. While a security researcher suggested that he might be the reason behind the outage, it remains unclear what caused the extended downtime.

Late last week, Apple outlined a plan for bringing the site back online, and began restoring systems on Friday. While the majority of Developer Center functions are now up and running, the Member Center, Forums, Videos, and Technical Support remain offline.

Update: According to the forums, many developers are currently seeing no delays at all with the app review process, especially for app updates.

The rumors about the new "plastic" iPhone (may be called the iPhone 5C, according to a recent leak) have been ramping up over the past couple of days, and now an enterprising case manufacturer has released a set of "iPhone 5C" cases on Amazon.com (via Nowhereelse.fr).

5ccase
The three cases, which are available in black, navy, and white, appear to be in line with low-cost iPhone dimensions that were leaked by another case maker in June.

The low-cost iPhone is expected to be similar in size to the current iPhone 5, though with a rounded polycarbonate shell that comes in an array of colors. MacRumors commissioned renderings in July showing what the phone could potentially look like based on current schematics.

It is not unusual for case manufacturers to use rumored case specs ahead of product releases to get a jump on manufacturing. Creating a case based on unconfirmed measurements is always a gamble, however, and there is no guarantee that elago's "5C" case will fit the finalized product that Apple produces.

Yesterday, a report emerged from the China Labor Watch claiming poor working conditions inside Pegatron, one of Apple's assembly partners, in which a "plastic iPhone" was confirmed. The quote was provided by a worker whose role was to apply protective film onto the rear shell of the device before the part enters the assembly process:

Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone's plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules.

According to recent reports, Apple's low-cost plastic iPhone is expected to be launched sometime in the fall, potentially as early as September.

moto_appleGoogle-owned Motorola Mobility and Apple have agreed to drop a combined total of 14 patents from litigation that were part of a Florida lawsuit scheduled to go to trial in 2014. Apple dropped 6 patents in the pending case, while Motorola dropped 8, leaving 8 total patents to be tried in court, reports FOSS Patents.

Yesterday (Monday, July 29 2013) Apple and Motorola filed a stipulation to dismiss a total of 14 patents from the Miami case. Apple had previously dropped two patents (though it reserved some rights subject to what happens on appeal), so the case was down from 24 to 22 patents. Under yesterday's stipulation, Motorola drops eight patents and Apple withdraws six, restoring parity. Subject to the court's (very likely) approval of this stipulation, either party will be asserting four patents going forward.

The lawsuit history between the two companies started in October 2010 after Motorola filed a complaint with the ITC accusing Apple of patent infringement, with Motorola seeking to bar Apple from importing, promoting, and distributing its products.

The lawsuit ramped up after Google acquired Motorola, with the company further expanding its charges against Apple. As the scope of the lawsuit grew out of control, the U.S. District Judge in the case, Robert Scola, chastised Apple and Motorola for the dispute, calling it a "business strategy that appears to have no end."

The two companies were given four months to streamline the case, under the threat of a hold. At this point in time, the two companies will each assert four patents in the Florida dispute, which is set to begin in August of next year.

According to a Chinese media report [Google translation] pointed out by 9to5Mac, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited China recently, possibly to discuss mobile growth after Apple announced a decline in growth within the market during its recent quarterly conference call. The article also claims that Cook may have met with the Chinese carriers to discuss the impending launch of the heavily rumored low-cost iPhone in the region, potentially named the iPhone 5C.

tim_cook_china

It is speculated that with the previous high-level meetings with China Telecom Cook similar, the two sides level will mainly focus on the issues discussed at the strategic level, may also be involved in co-generation iPhone and sales.

Insiders pointed out that China and the Cook high-level talks with China Telecom, may mean that the new generation iPhone will likely be listed in China through China Telecom first sale.

It is understood that since Apple CEO Cook served as third visit to China since it is unclear the specific time of Cook's visit and travel arrangements, Cook is expected to be in the next few days, respectively, in China Unicom and China Mobile executives meeting. Early January 2013 and mid-March 2012, Apple CEO Cook to the identity of the first visit to China, one after another with the Ministry of Industry executives and China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom's top leaders met.

Since Cook served as Apple CEO, Apple's emphasis on the Chinese market gradually improved. At present, through China Unicom and China Telecom, Apple covers China's 350 million users.

The news of the visit comes after a Chinese labor group alleged poor working conditions at Pegatron, a main Apple supplier in China earlier this week. Earlier this year, Cook visited China to discuss "cooperation" with China Mobile, and also met with various government officials during his prior trip.

sprint_logoSprint revealed today in its Q2 2013 results that it had sold 1.4 million iPhones last quarter, with 41% of those iPhones being sold to new customers. The company announced an 8% overall year-over-year growth, posting a record high revenue of $8 billion. This holds steady when compared to the 1.4 million iPhones it sold in the year-ago quarter. Sprint also announced LTE networks in 41 new markets, bringing its total LTE locations to 151 markets.

Eighty-six percent of quarterly Sprint platform postpaid handset sales were smartphones, including approximately 1.4 million iPhones® sold during the quarter. Forty-one percent of iPhone sales were to new customers.

In 2011, Sprint committed to buying $20 billion worth of iPhones from Apple, and launched the iPhone on its prepaid Virgin Mobile USA brand in the year-ago quarter.

According to multiple Twitter reports and a tipster who contacted MacRumors, individual Netflix profiles are now showing up on the Apple TV. The personalized profile feature, which is expected to be launched in August, will allow users of shared Netflix accounts to select a unique profile when accessing the service.

Netflix first debuted its personalized user profiles earlier this year at E3, giving select users beta access to the feature. With personalized profiles, each family member or Netflix user can have a separate profile with customizable avatars, individualized viewing histories, unique content recommendations, and parental control options.

appletvnetflix
While the feature is not yet available to the general public, the infrastructure has been launched on the Apple TV. According to a Netflix customer service representative, Netflix users who previously set up profiles when using the DVD service will now see those profiles show up on the Apple TV.

Profiles cannot be altered at this time, and additional users cannot be added, but users who already have profiles in place will see the option when opening the Netflix app. Netflix says that the official release will come to all users "later this summer," allowing individual profiles to be set up on the web and then accessed on the Apple TV.

(Thanks, Mark!)

Along with the new iOS 7 beta 4 and iTunes 11 releases, Apple has also seeded version 5.4 of its Apple TV software to developers.

The third beta of the Apple TV software includes (via Schimanke.com) a function that allows users to purchase music from the iTunes store, a feature that was removed from earlier versions of the Apple TV software.

itunesmusic1
iTunes Music purchases can be made from the Music icon on the home screen of the Apple TV, which offers an iTunes Store-style interface.

itunesmusic2
The function is demonstrated in the video below:

Both individual songs and entire albums can be purchased and listened to using the new function on the Apple TV. The feature, along with iTunes Radio and a "Conference Room Mode" designed for business and academic settings, will be available for public use in the fall.

As noted in our post detailing the smaller changes in iOS 7, the Apple TV can also now be set up with an iPhone or an iPad running iOS 7.

The updated Apple TV software is expected to be available alongside iOS 7 later this year.

Apple LogoA pair of former Apple Retail employees have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple for lost wages. The lawsuit stems from an Apple retail policy that requires employees have their personal bags and purses inspected by managers before leaving the store for breaks, lunches and at the end of a shift.

The lawsuit alleges that employees are made to wait -- off the clock -- for as long as 5 to 15 minutes per shift while waiting for a manager to inspect their belongings for stolen property. The policy is in effect at all Apple Retail stores and could potentially affect thousands of employees going back more than 10 years.

Apple has engaged and continues to engage in illegal and improper wage practices that have deprived Apple Hourly Employees throughout the United States of millions of dollars in wages and overtime compensation. These practices include requiring Apple Hourly Employees to wait in line and undergo two off-the-clock security bags searches and clearance checks when they leave for their meal breaks and after they have clocked out at the end of their shifts.

These "personal package and bag searches" are done for the sole benefit of Apple; are a uniform practice and policy in all Apple retail stores nationwide; and are not imposed on Apple's customers. This illegal practice and policy has been known to the Defendant for years and Apple continues to require Apple Hourly Employees to endure these required but uncompensated security checks. For this reason, Plaintiffs bring this action on behalf of themselves and other Apple Hourly Employees to recover unpaid wages, overtime compensation, penalties, interest, injunctive relief, damages and reasonable attorneys' fees and costs.

The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages and accuses Apple of violating the Fair Labor Standards Act as well as other state labor laws. The initial filing, for the US District Court for the Northern District of California, is embedded below.

Disclosure: Jordan Golson is a former Apple Retail employee and is potentially part of the class.

Following its 2012 acquisition of mobile security firm AuthenTec, which specialized in fingerprint sensors, Apple has been rumored to be looking to incorporate its technology into its future products. Rumors have indicated that such a sensor could be a differentiating feature for Apple's upcoming iPhone 5S, although there has so far been little in the way of solid evidence that such a feature is in the works.

But as noted by Hamza Sood, Apple's developer release of iOS 7 beta 4 today has brought a significant clue that Apple is indeed planning to bring the technology to the iPhone later this year.

ios_7_fingerprint_bundle
The evidence arrives in the form of a new code bundle in the Accessibility portion of iOS 7. The bundle, named BiometricKitUI, contains text strings related to a tutorial on how to use a fingerprint sensor on an iPhone. The relevant strings include:

- Photo of a person holding an iPhone with their left hand while touching the Home button with their thumb
- Photo of a person holding an iPhone with their right hand while touching the Home button with their thumb
- A fingerprint that changes colour during the setup process.
- Recognition is %@ complete

Several reports have indicated that incorporating a fingerprint sensor into the iPhone 5S has proven difficult for Apple, potentially limiting launch supplies of the device as production bottlenecks are worked out.
