Apple has purchased artificial intelligence startup Emotient, reports The Wall Street Journal. According to its website, Emotient uses artificial intelligence to read emotion through the analysis of facial expressions.

Emotient's technology was previously used by advertisers to determine emotional reactions to advertisements. It let advertisers know whether an ad was getting noticed, how people responded, and whether a reaction was positive or negative. The technology used cameras to capture video that was then analyzed to "learn about the customer's state of mind."

emotient

Emotient is the leader in emotion detection and sentiment analysis, part of a neuromarketing wave that is driving a quantum leap in customer understanding. Our services quantify emotional response, leading to insights and actions that improves your products and how you market them.

An Apple spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to The Wall Street Journal with its standard acquisition statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

It isn't known what Apple will do with Emotient's technology, but the company has made two other semi-related acquisitions in recent months. In October, Apple purchased Perceptio, a startup focused on deep learning and image-recognition systems, and in September, Apple acquired real-time motion capture firm Faceshift, a company that worked on technology to capture facial expressions using 3D sensors.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere today wrote a letter in response to recent criticisms of the company's new free video streaming service "Binge On," claiming that the program does not permanently slow down data and that claims of throttling are just "playing semantics." Legere also reiterated the fact that users can opt out of the service at any time, and that anyone with the ability to access Binge On has "complete control" over the experience if they want higher than 480p resolution.

There are people out there saying we’re “throttling.” They’re playing semantics! Binge On does NOT permanently slow down data nor remove customer control. Here’s the thing, mobile customers don’t always want or need giant heavy data files. So we created adaptive video technology to optimize for mobile screens and stream at a bitrate designed to stretch your data (pssst, Google, that's a GOOD thing).

You get the same quality of video as watching a DVD – 480p or higher – but use only 1/3 as much data (or, of course, NO data used when it’s a Binge On content provider!). Watch more video, use less data from your service plan. That's an important and valuable benefit!

In the rest of the letter, the CEO calls out media outlets for making Binge On into a negative story over the past few weeks, suggesting some places as "using Net Neutrality as a platform to get into the news." Legere compares the new service to T-Mobile's "Music Freedom" platform that launched in 2014, giving customers free music streaming that wouldn't affect data plan cost.

In addition to reassuring customers, T-Mobile today announced a slate of fourteen new Binge On partners including: A&E, Lifetime, HISTORY Channel, and PlayStation Vue Live TV. The new additions bring the partner total to 38 and the company said that more than 50 providers are preparing to back the free streaming program in the months ahead.

Since Binge On launched in November, the service's questionable video throttling of non-partner content has brought it under scrutiny multiple times. Just this week, an independent test proved that a smartphone with Binge On enabled throttled video streaming of services not affiliated with T-Mobile and the free initiative. CEO John Legere's response today is the second time the company has directly addressed Binge On's negative accusations, following a dispute with YouTube in December.

Those interested can read Legere's full letter on T-Mobile's blog.

It will mark Apple's 26th retail store in mainland China, while the company also operates four retail stores in Hong Kong.

Apple has aggressively expanded its footprint in China under the leadership of retail chief Angela Ahrendts, with new stores in Shenyang on January 9, Nanning on December 12, Beijing on November 28 and Chengdu on November 21. Innovative Developers LTD has launched a new app called "Vidyo!" that allows users to easily capture video of their iPhone screen right on the device. Users can capture their screen within any app and edit or add background music and commentary to their video captures.

vidyo
According to MacStories, the app works by simulating an AirPlay mirroring connection to the app itself. Capturing begins when a user toggles "Device Screen" within the app, exits the app and then chooses Vidyo! as an AirPlay source in Control Center.

While the app is currently in the App Store, it's unclear whether Apple will pull the app as it simulates AirPlay mirroring. Apple doesn't currently provide APIs for iOS devices to act as AirPlay receivers and, according to App Store Review Guideline 2.5, apps can be rejected for using non-public APIs.

Vidyo! is available in the App Store for $4.99. [Direct Link]

Update 1/7 9:30 a.m.: Vidyo has been removed from the App Store and is no longer available for download.

First Alert's first HomeKit-enabled product, the Onelink Smoke Alarm, was released in November. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, First Alert is showing off several additional HomeKit-connected products, including an environment monitor, a thermostat, and the first HomeKit safe.

The OneLink by First Alert Wi-Fi Safe is a small in-home safe meant to house small valuables. It connects to a HomeKit setup via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing Siri voice commands or the accompanying iPhone app to open the safe when directed. The safe runs on batteries and includes a built-in accelerometer that is able to send an alert to the iPhone if someone attempts to move or open it.

firstalertsafe
First Alert's Onelink Environment Monitor monitors the temperature and humidity in a room, plus it includes sensors that are able to detect both high and low levels of carbon monoxide. A multi-color LED ring on the outside of the Monitor lets users see the status of the environment at a glance, changing colors to reflect shifting temperatures. Alerts are also sent to an iOS device.

firstalertenvironmentmonitor
The Onelink by First Alert Wi-Fi Thermostat joins several other HomeKit-enabled thermostats that are available on the market. Like other thermostats, it connects to a home's Wi-Fi connection to allow the temperature to be controlled using Siri voice commands or the Onelink Home app.

Additional information on First Alert's HomeKit-enabled products, including pricing details and release dates, will be available later in 2016.

That breaks down to a salary of $2 million, non-equity incentive compensation of $8 million, and other compensation of $280k. Cook earned approximately $1 million more than he did in fiscal 2014, when he brought in $9.2 million.

Last year, with stock awards and hiring bonuses, Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts earned $73 million, but in 2015, her compensation was $25.8 million, in line with other Apple executives, all of whom received $20 million in stock awards and $4 million in non-equity incentive compensation in addition to their $1 million salaries.

Senior executives Bruce Sewell, Dan Riccio, Eddy Cue, and Luca Maestri all earned more than $25 million in 2015, numbers that do not include restricted stock units that vested in 2015. Over the course of the year, Tim Cook received 560,000 shares of stock worth over $57 million, Angela Ahrendts received 391,634 shares worth $50 million. Eddy Cue, Dan Riccio, Bruce Sewell, and Luca Maestri also had shares worth between $11 million and $38 million vest.

Ahead of the Apple Watch's launch, many high-end Swiss watch makers were critical of its design and Apple's efforts to position it as a high-fashion item. TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver went as far as to call it "too feminine," saying the Apple Watch looked like "it was designed by a student in their first trimester."

As time has passed, opinions on the Apple Watch have changed. It has prompted some high-end luxury watch makers to consider delving into the smart watch market themselves, and it also seems to be the inspiration behind high-end watchmaker H. Moser & Cie.'s latest product.

swissalpwatch
Shared today by watch site Hodinkee, H. Moser & Cie.'s Swiss Alp Watch has a design that's immediately familiar, featuring a rectangular watch face with curved, rounded edges, a crown at the side, and Apple Watch-style lugs for holding a band in place.

Constructed from solid 18-karat white gold, the Swiss Alp Watch measures in at 38.2mm by 44mm, with a depth of 10.3mm. That's comparable to the 42mm Apple Watch, which is 35.9mm by 42mm with a depth of 10.5mm. It comes with a beige kudu leather strap with a white gold pin buckle.

The resemblance between the Swiss Alp Watch and the Apple Watch is purely physical. There is no processor, no OLED display, and no sensors in the Swiss Alp Watch, which is entirely mechanical. When flipped over, there's no heart rate sensor -- instead, the inner mechanics of the watch (a finished tonneau movement with a Straumann hairspring, according to Hodinkee) are visible through a clear sapphire crystal panel.

swissalpwatch2
H. Moser & Cie. does not mention the Apple Watch on its website or in its marketing materials, but when speaking to Hodinkee, H. Moser & Cie. CEO Edouard Meylan said the Swiss Alp Watch is symbolic, serving as a proof traditional mechanical watchmaking has a future in a world where the digital smart watch is becoming commonplace. Swiss watchmaking, he says, has weathered other challenges and it will continue on.

"Today, H. Moser & Cie. launches the Swiss Alp Watch as a statement of this new challenge and to prove that traditional mechanical watchmaking has a future, and it is, in fact, the future. It is much more than a watch for us. The Swiss Alp Watch is symbolic. It represents our resilience, our ferocious desire to fight for our values and traditions. It embodies everything we believe in."

Given that H. Moser & Cie. is pricing the white gold Swiss Alp Watch at $24,900 with only 50 pieces available, it's unlikely Apple will take offense over the copycat design.

The full story of the H. Moser & Cie. Swiss Alp Watch, which includes background color on the Swiss watch industry and hands-on details, can be read over at Hodkinee.

Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming OS X 10.11.3 El Capitan update to developers and public beta testers for testing purposes, three weeks after seeding the first OS X 10.11.3 beta and a month after releasing OS X 10.11.2.

The second OS X 10.11.3 beta, build 15D13b, can be downloaded through the Apple Developer Center or via the Software Update Mechanism in the Mac App Store for those who installed the first beta.

Taiwanese website Apple.club.tw has shared leaked images of the purported backlight assembly for the "iPhone 7" display. The component draws some similarities to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus backlight assembly, although the 3D Touch chip and LCD flex cables are relocated on this leaked part.

iPhone-7-Backlight-Assembly

Leaked backlight assembly purportedly for "iPhone 7" display

The website speculates the component could also be for Apple's next-generation 4-inch iPhone, but previous reports have said the much-rumored "iPhone 6c" will not have 3D Touch. The pictured size of the 3D Touch chip and flex cables also suggests the backlight assembly is designed for larger than a 4-inch display.

iPhone 6s 6s Plus Backlight Assembly

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus backlight assembly for comparison

Apple.club.tw has accurately leaked or republished multiple Apple products in the past, including the iPhone 6 protruding camera lens, iPhone 6 logic board and iPad Air 2 logic board, but its February 2015 rumor about Apple adding Touch ID on the MacBook, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad has yet to happen.

Apple may remove the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in favor of an all-in-one Lightning connector, possibly helping the smartphones achieve between 6.0mm and 6.5mm thinness and a waterproof design. The devices may also have a faster TSMC-built A10 chip and non-metallic casing with hidden antenna bands.

iPhone 7 Plus could have 3GB of RAM, 256GB storage and a larger 3,100 mAh battery.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey last night hinted at an incoming change to the 140-character limit for which the social network has been known over the past decade. Dorsey mentioned that the limit has "become a beautiful constraint" over the years, but the company is aware of certain workarounds its fans are going through to break away from the rule.

jack dorsey twitter
He points towards a possibility in the near future for the site to support full-bodied text tweets that are searchable and can be highlighted by users without a strict 140-character restriction. Back in August, Twitter removed the same limit from its private messaging system, and a month later new rumors about the possibility for the same move for traditional tweets began circling.

"At its core Twitter is public messaging. A simple way to say something, to anyone, that everyone in the world can see instantly. We've spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it.

Instead, what if that text...was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That's more utility and power. What makes Twitter, Twitter is its fast, public, live conversational nature. We will always work to to strengthen that. And by focusing on conversation and messaging, the majority of tweets will always be short and sweet and conversational!"

According to people familiar with Twitter's plans, speaking with Re/code, the project is referred to as "Beyond 140" and has a tentative launch window around the end of Q1 2016. Numbers that have been considered internally by the team range from 5,000 to 10,000 character limits, the latter of which would fall alongside the same restriction placed inside of private messages on the site.

The sources point to expandable actions for the new tweets that would keep timelines as tight and orderly as they appear with the current limit, but include an expandable prompt that would then showcase the tweet's full text when clicked. Recently, Twitter updated its site to allow full images to appear without being cut off, and changed the favoriting star to a heart.

At this year's Consumer Electronics Show, Olloclip is ready to show off its completed Studio mobile photography system and has announced a January launch date for the product.

Created to work alongside Olloclip's line of iPhone lenses, the Studio combines an iPhone 6/6s or 6/6s Plus case with an integrated rail-mounting solution and a selection of mountable accessories.

olloclipstudio

"When designing the Studio system, we realized the user experience and application needed to be as simple and efficient as our lenses. The end result is the most intuitive and effortless way to grip an iPhone while filming and shooting photos, enabling users to be more immersed in the capture process than ever before," said Patrick O'Neill, founder and chief design officer of olloclip. "The new set of accessories and mounts are not only great for taking photos and shooting video, but also for new broadcasting applications like Twitter's Periscope and social media favorites like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat."

The main component of the Studio system is the Studio Case, which can be used with the Studio accessories or as a standalone case. It's Olloclip's most protective case, designed to protect the iPhone from accidental drops. On the back of the case, there's an integrated rail mount for attaching accessory pieces, cold-shoe adapters, a finger grip, mounts, and a kickstand.

olloclipstudio2
Finger Grip - Olloclip's Studio finger grip is deal for improving stability when taking photos or capturing video. It fits over two fingers and lets the user quickly switch between portrait and orientation landscape.

1/4-20 Mounts - The Studio system comes with two standard 1/4-20 mounts, ideal for attaching the iPhone (in the Studio Case) to a tripod, a grip, or a handle. There's one mount for portrait mode and one mount for landscape mode.

Cold-Shoe Adapters - The two included cold-shoe adapters can be used to attach lightweight accessories like a microphone or a light to the iPhone.

Kickstand - The Kickstand is useful for watching a movie, editing a video, or reading a website.

Olloclip's Studio for the iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, and 6s Plus will be available from the Olloclip website in January of 2016. It will retail for $89.99.

Misfit today unveiled the new products that it is planning to show off at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, announcing both the Ray activity tracker and the Specter "Smart Hearable" in-ear wireless headphones. Like most of Misfit's products, both are designed to track activity and sleep.

Misfit's Ray Fitness and Sleep Monitor is its latest wrist or neck-worn wearable device, which moves away from the iconic circular shape of its previous Shine and Flash line of products. The Ray instead more closely resembles a Jawbone UP2, featuring an adjustable rubber band with a cylindrical aluminum body. At 12mm in diameter and 38mm long, Misfit says Ray's form factor makes it "uniquely wearable."

misfitray
Inside the Ray activity tracker, there's a 3-axis accelerometer for tracking sleep and activity, along with a vibration motor for user feedback and alerts. It includes a multicolor LED "eye," which combines with the motor to nudge users during periods of inactivity, alert them to incoming text and calls, or serve as a silent alarm. Ray is water resistant to 50 meters and does not need to be charged as it uses watch batteries that are replaced on a six-month basis.

Specter is Misfit's other new product, positioned as the company's first smart wireless headphones. Specter was created in partnership with 1MORE and features dual driver technology for wide dynamic range and rich sound quality. According to Misfit, the Specter's design allows it to be worn comfortably all day, during exercise, and during sleep. Specter's unique feature is a built-in accelerometer, which allows the earphones to be used to track activity and sleep when used, much like Misfit's other products.

misfitspecter
Both Ray and Specter are compatible with Misfit Link, Misfit's software platform that lets the company's line of wearable devices be used as a remote control for functions like changing music, taking a selfie, activating iPhone-connected lights, and more.

Ray is available in Rose Gold and Carbon Black. Priced at $99, it's set to ship in the spring and can be pre-ordered today from the Misfit website.

Information on the Specter headphones is still limited, so pricing and a release date have not yet been shared. Misfit says additional details on Specter will be available in the spring of 2016.

Appstore-HolidaysApple today announced the 2015 holiday season was the "biggest ever" for the App Store, with customers spending a record-breaking $1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases over a two-week period ending January 3, 2016.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day both set single-day records, with customers spending over $144 million on January 1, 2016. Apple has now paid out nearly $40 billion to developers worldwide since the App Store launched in 2008.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said App Store sales topped $20 billion in 2015:

“The App Store had a holiday season for the record books. We are excited that our customers downloaded and enjoyed so many incredible apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, spending over $20 billion on the App Store last year alone,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We're grateful to all the developers who have created the most innovative and exciting apps in the world for our customers. We can't wait for what's to come in 2016.”

Apple said it has now created 1.9 million jobs in the U.S., with over 1.4 million of those jobs attributable to app development and non-IT jobs supported by the app ecosystem. Apple's spend and investment with US-based suppliers also supports 361,000 jobs, and the company directly employs more than 76,000 people in the U.S., representing nearly two‑thirds of its worldwide team.

Apple created two new app ecosystems this year with the new Apple TV and Apple Watch, building upon its iOS and Mac storefronts. The company keeps 30% of App Store revenue, meaning it earned over $6 billion in 2015 after paying developers. There are now over 1.6 million apps on the App Store, according to MacRumors sister website AppShopper.
