Apple's First Touchscreen Mac is Now Arriving to Customers

It's Friday, November 6 in Australia and New Zealand, which means customers who preordered a PROLED touchscreen MacBook Pro, OLED iPad mini, M6 ‌MacBook Pro‌, or M6 iMac are now starting to receive their devices.

People will soon be sharing photos and first impressions of the new products on the MacRumors forums, Reddit, Instagram, and other platforms, giving us a first look at what real-world users think of the ‌OLED‌ upgrade for the ‌iPad mini‌ and the PROLED and touchscreen update for the ‌MacBook Pro‌.

Apple's new high-end ‌MacBook Pro‌ models come with M5 Pro or M5 Max, and the major change is the display. It's touch-enabled and is the first Mac with an ‌OLED‌ display. The design has been updated, so the new machines are thinner and lighter than the mini-LED models, which Apple is still selling. Apple also brought back the glowing Apple logo, and replaced the notch with a Dynamic Island. Pricing on the PROLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch model.

The ‌OLED‌ ‌iPad mini‌ is Apple's first smaller-screened iPad to get ‌OLED‌, and it's also the most affordable ‌OLED‌ ‌iPad‌. It's almost a millimeter thinner than the prior version and has an Acoustic Display that does away with speaker holes. Without them, the enclosure is sealed, making it the first ‌iPad‌ with a water and dust resistance rating (IP67). It uses Apple's A20 Pro chip. The ‌OLED‌ ‌iPad mini‌ starts at $699.

The 14-inch entry-level ‌MacBook Pro‌ and 24-inch ‌iMac‌ got little in the way of updates beyond an M6 chip. The ‌MacBook Pro‌ is priced starting at $1,999, and the ‌iMac‌ starts at $1,499.

Australia is the first country where customers can buy one of the new products in an Apple retail location. Online orders of the PROLED ‌MacBook Pro‌ don't ship until late November or early December, so it's possible in-store stock will be limited. The ‌OLED‌ ‌iPad mini‌, 14-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, and ‌iMac‌ should be readily available.

After Australia and New Zealand, sales and deliveries of the new Macs and ‌iPad mini‌ will begin in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and finally, North America.

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

Revolutionary 🤌🏻

“The Mac is totally optimized for indirect input. We haven’t really felt a reason to change that.”

- John Appleseed
One of the video reviews I watched showed how devs could use the touchscreen to test their iOS apps directly on the MBP screen, that seems genuinely useful

It's frustrating that all these reviews gushing over how undoubtedly great the new MacBook Pro is, all fail to acknowledge the price point. Given that effectively in the last year and a half, this new model has become £1000 more expensive, in 2 generations, means it should be getting like a 6/10 review. As a laptop designed primarily to get work done, it offers rather poor value. Doesn't matter that it's an exceptional piece of hardware, it feels like a modern day Lisa...
Every single piece of computing has gotten more expensive, it’s not like Apple raised their prices in a vacuum, so unless reviewers cap every review of every computer, tablet, phone, etc at 7/10 for the next few years until AI stops eating all the memory on the planet I’m not sure why you would simply drop the rating of one product

The problem is that RAM prices has gone up 500% in the past year. SSD is on a similar trajectory. Apple was holding prices to some extent over the last year or so, but with a new model they have to price it to reflect their current costs. They issues their financial reports today and their margins are lower than they were last quarter. The prices hit them and they have to pass on the costs.

I'm pretty miffed at the pricing strategy too, but I also admit that a Pro or Max chip has been overkill for my usual workload. The base M chip has become so capable that Apple is creating a clear division for professionals that need the power and are willing to pay for it. As for the rest of us peasants, let them eat Air.
