Apple HomeView Could Double as a Security Camera

Apple's upcoming HomeView smart home hub could also work as a HomeKit Secure Video camera, according to settings strings discovered in the device's software by code sleuth pdfu.

homeview home screen feature 2
The strings were found in HomeView Software 27.2 and feature four camera modes, including Off, Detect Activity, Stream, and "Stream & Allow Recording," along with scheduling options for when users are home, away, or asleep.

Notably, pdfu says there's also a HomeView-specific configuration for 1080p/30fps video and microphone input, which the software selects for HomeKit Secure Video sessions.

Other strings suggest that only home members will be able to view streams and recordings. They also indicate that a green light appears and a sound plays when a stream is viewed or recording starts, and users will receive a notification when camera settings change.

The scheduling options include an away mode, but the strings suggest streaming and recording can only be enabled from the HomeView itself while people are home. Expect face recognition and activity zones to be configured in the Home app on iPhone.

Elsewhere, pdfu highlighted a related Home app string suggesting that when the Home app is open on a member's device, the the HomeView may take photos to refresh its camera preview, and these too will be accompanied by a green light.

Apple has not announced a camera feature for HomeView, and the presence of code strings in the device's software doesn't confirm that it will be available to users at launch. HomeView launches on Friday, November 13, starting at $299. Apple's early release of the device's software has already given us a preview of features like wallpapers, revealing other details we didn't previously know.

RIP, homeOS

Tuesday October 13, 2026 9:39 am PDT by
MacRumors was first to reveal the name "HomeView" last week, after discovering a trademark filing from a secretive shell company that we correctly suspected was linked to Apple. Apple was likely behind a "homeOS" trademark filing as well, but the company ultimately decided to stick with generic "HomeView software" naming, just like it refers to the HomePod's operating system as "HomePod...

So nice for everyone except EU members...
Sure, it’s frustrating to miss out in the short term. But I’m happy to wait for Apple to offer proper interoperability alongside strong privacy protections.

If *I buy* the hardware, *I want to be able to choose* which assistant I use, with equivalent access to the capabilities it needs, *subject to permissions I control*.

That’s the kind of openness that helped the PC ecosystem and the web thrive and who benefited was us, customers & consumers. And Apple benefits from that openness too:

* Safari uses shared web standards
* Mail and Calendar work with independent providers as well
* this is essentially true even for the iPhone itself

All those products are more useful because different companies' systems can work together. I want that same principle applied to assistants.

Long term, I’d rather have meaningful choice and control over my device and how I use it than accept more vendor lock-in just to get a feature sooner.

And sure, before someone inevitably points it out, I can freely choose a different device. Which I currently do, while looking for a viable option from Apple. And Apple, of course, can also choose to stop offering its hardware and services in the EU. Yada yada. So far it seems they want to continue 🫶:

Siri AI is currently unavailable in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Apple is working constructively with the EU in an attempt to find a path forward. [emphasis added by me; source: https://nr.apple.com/Db4g1b9wm0]
BTW, for a device like HomeView, I’d be happier with physical switches that disconnect the camera and microphone. Even if I trust Apple’s software, privacy can easily inlcude tangible controls rather than relying entirely on software settings, assurances and "LED is on". E.g. Sonos and some other companies already offer physical microphone controls on some of their hardware; I’d love if that principle applied to both the mic and camera here. Perhaps we can hope in second gen.

Am I the only the one thinks it's a bit too much bs to software-nerf a device that they've had laying around long enough that it basically should have it's second gen software and features already?
