Skyrim Comes to Apple Silicon Macs With New Unofficial Installer

Bethesda's beloved role-playing game "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" has reached multiple generations of consoles since its 2011 debut, but it never officially came to the Mac. A new unofficial project called SkyrimMT now aims to make playing and modding it on Apple silicon Macs easier than ever.

skyrim
Mac owners have found ways to play Skyrim over the years, including installing Windows through Boot Camp on Intel Macs and using compatibility software such as CrossOver. Boot Camp is unavailable on Apple silicon Macs, leaving players dependent on other solutions to run the Windows game.

SkyrimMT's appeal is in bringing that process together in an app built specifically for Skyrim. Its automated setup installs the required compatibility software and guides users through signing in to Steam and installing their copy of the game. It supports Skyrim Special Edition and Anniversary Edition.

Its native mod manager supports browsing Nexus Mods, installing Nexus Collections and Wabbajack modlists, and importing Mod Organizer 2 setups. Common additions such as Skyrim Script Extender and SkyUI can also be installed through the app. Users can maintain separate mod profiles, inspect conflicts, sort load orders, and restore earlier configurations from snapshots.

Under the hood, SkyrimMT runs the Windows game through Wine and uses DXMT to translate its Direct3D 11 graphics to Apple's Metal.

SkyrimMT requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later, approximately 25GB of free storage, and a Steam copy of the game. The open-source app is available from the project's GitHub releases page.

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

Mark Gurman: Apple Made 'Major Mistake' With iPhone Duo Pre-Orders

Sunday October 18, 2026 7:33 am PDT by
Despite knowing that the iPhone Duo would face "severe supply constraints" due to manufacturing challenges, Apple chose to begin iPhone Duo pre-orders on Friday instead of waiting until it had more inventory ready, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter today, he called this decision a "major mistake." "Let me cut to the chase: Apple made a major mistake here," he...

Not as cool as if they recompiled it to run natively on Apple Silicon. I hope devs can prove native Mac OS and iOS is viable for gaming. Skyrim, Halo MCC, Call of Duty should he on Mac OS and iOS.
I agree, the strength of apples onboard graphics is quite impressive. Would be so nice to leverage it more for gaming as well.

Motivated people with AI are doing the work Apple should have been doing. This is probably the 5th or 6th project I've seen in the past couple weeks where someone is releasing an impressively performant port of a popular game on Mac (just saw GTA5 and RDR2 recently). Sometimes it's not a port, it's just a wrapper that lets you run the games you already own on Steam.

The most impressive one was some engineer (from Railway I believe) created an experimental mod for Minecraft that uses Metal instead of OpenGL and he was getting 1000fps on an M1 Mac lol -- an insane improvement over the vanilla game.

Apple never go all in, they always play it conservative and hedge their bets. Imagine if they poured a few million of dev resources into assisting with Proton development and made an official partnership with Steam to port PC games to Mac. That's chump change for them. Or imagine if they supported the Asahi project and helped make Apple Silicon Linux a thing. I'm tempted to buy a new Linux laptop just for agentic dev work because of all the great work being done there and it's making me question my decision to buy the new OLED MBP... If Apple had official support for dual booting (or better, a really slick VM system like Cua) I wouldn't be considering any other hardware right now.

It would’ve been a lot more impressive if it were a somewhat recent game like Cyberpunk 2077 or something similar. But somehow, a 15 year old game finally running decently on a Mac is headline-worthy news lol.

Edit:
Reading my comment again, it came off a bit more snarky than I intended. Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually pretty excited about this project and definitely willing to give it a try.

I just wish Apple would put more effort into supporting projects like this and making things easier for everyone. If Valve can make Windows games run on Linux through Proton, I’m pretty sure Apple has more than enough resources and engineering talent to pull off something similar on macOS.

Sure, the technical challenges aren’t exactly the same, but I’d love to see Apple put more effort into making its platform more gaming-friendly.

Nearly all these projects use the Apple Game Porting Toolkit to get the game running on macOS, so Apple is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Also, if you're not aware you should check out https://github.com/NotProtonNot/NotProton. It still requires Crossover to be installed, but the experience is pretty much run the Mac Steam client, download game, click play and it just works a remarkable amount of the time.

All development is mostly or entirely "vibe coded" from last year on.
Adding to that. There is code that really needs careful crafting and there is code that just needs to pass testing
