HomeView's Faces Include Snoopy, Photos, and Interactive Artwork

Apple's HomeView includes customizable faces for photos, animations, and smart home controls.

homeview faces
Faces Apple has named so far include:

  • Photos
  • Flow
  • Snoopy
  • Calendar
  • Weather
  • Home Modular
  • Home Camera

Other clock and widget layouts appear in Apple's promotional images, but have not yet been named. Apple says that selected faces change throughout the day, with different appearances for mornings and evenings.

The ‌Photos‌ face turns the HomeView into a digital picture frame, displaying a single image or rotating through a collection. It uses Portrait-style depth effects to keep the subject sharp while blurring the foreground and background. Shared albums also allow friends and family to contribute pictures remotely.

For an animated display, the Flow face responds to physical presence and movement, changing its colors and light as people move nearby. The Snoopy face features animations that reflect the time of day, weather, sporting events, and holidays.

Other faces provide direct access to smart home information. Home Modular offers quick access to favorite accessories, while Home Camera can livestream up to nine camera feeds simultaneously.

The HomeView's interface adjusts to the user's distance, presenting simpler information that can be read from across the room and more detail as they move closer. Its 7-inch Liquid Retina display also automatically adjusts brightness, ranging from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits for use at night.

Both the tabletop and wall-mounted HomeView models launch on November 13 and cost $299 in the U.S.

We need a full demo of this device from Apple themselves.

So far we've had a few stock videos (a.k.a adverts) and some YouTube creators' first impressions (which when you watch one you've pretty much watched them all, as they're using the same apple-approved script).

Everyone else seems a bit confused by it. Even the aforementioned YouTubers, when they're away from Apple's watchful eye, came back with mixed impressions.

Apple of old would have actually demo'd it on stage or at the very least shown it off themselves in a live setting e.g. an interview.

That's why yesterdays 'event' felt so disconnected. It's fine to have press releases for spec bumps or products that are clear in what they do e.g. AirPods Max. But for a new product that needs to make an argument for existing, we need to actually see it.

Importantly, Apple needs to be the ones to show it to us in a real setting. They can't pass setting the first impressions off to YouTube content creators.

If they don't want to show it off, it gives the impression they're just releasing it for the sake of it, not because they are passionate about the product.

Sanitised ads are to be expected but only after you've properly introduced it.

Similar vibes with the Vision Pro, not one apple exec was seen wearing the thing around the time of it's release. There was one picture of Tim Cook IIRC but it was on the front page of a magazine months after it's announcement, not him genuinely showing it off and showing enthusiasm for it like the time he came on stage and rolled up his sleeve to show the Apple Watch.

Come on apple, don't act coy like you're just 'leaving this here', if you want people to be convinced shout about it a bit more and, radical idea I know, actually show us you USING it rather than paying actors and YouTubers to do it for you.

I am beginning to warm to the device. I like how every family member can have personal access.
Yes - but it begs the question, if everyone already has an iPhone - why are they running to this big screen (with a potential audience) to view their personal stuff?

Once the novelty wears off, I'm sure it will be an egg timer or answer a random Siri trivia question device.

Still can’t believe it doesn’t have an OLED. I mean what if this thing is in your room at night? Standby mode will look horrible with LCD black levels.

If you buy an iPhone stand and charger you could literally use 99% of the features, heck even with a pop socket you could re-create this. What a bizarre product, marketed as a solution to a problem that doesn’t even exist.
