Apple's New CEO John Ternus is Making Product Design a 'Major Priority'

Since becoming Apple's CEO last month, John Ternus has made product design a "major priority," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

John Ternus iPhone Duo
"Ternus already had some involvement with the design studio as Apple's head of hardware engineering, given the close coordination required between the two functions," he said, in his Power On newsletter today. "Since becoming CEO, however, he has immersed himself in the industrial design and human interface teams."

Ternus goes "hands-on" in Apple's design studio "several times a week, sometimes visiting multiple times in a single day," whereas Apple's former CEO Tim Cook typically visited the studio for "about an hour once a month, at most," according to Gurman.

Unlike Cook, who is better known as a supply chain expert, Ternus comes from an engineering background. As such, Gurman said that Ternus is largely leaving Apple's finances to financial chief Kevan Parekh and its supply chain to operations chief Sabih Khan, giving him more time to focus on engineering and design.

All in all, Apple now has a product person running the show.

He should make software design a priority. The hardware is fine.

Edit:

Here's the full article since the one MR linked to is behind a paywall: https://archive.is/20261004140103/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2026-10-04/apple-s-john-ternus-leads-design-touch-screen-oled-macbook-pro-gets-lighter

Apparently Ternus was responsible for making the hardware and software teams work together more years ago. But now he's going to be more aggressively involved to make sure things are more cohesive. That and he's an actual engineer.

Hardware is one thing, people getting fatigued by the same design on repeat.
Software reliability, should be priority.
All software should be a stable and optimized. Remember 10.6.8.

Yes. New Siri is living proof of that.

Siri has always had one or two arms tied behind its back due to Apple's privacy stance, since it severely limits its training data. Even the new AI Siri is limited by Apple's guardrails. Apple could have disregarded privacy like other companies to better compete in that area, but I for one am happy to sacrifice some assistant/AI functionality for my privacy.
