The era of the iPhone SE is officially over, and likely for good this time.
After introducing the iPhone 16e last week, Apple discontinued the third-generation iPhone SE.
While it has a new name, the iPhone 16e is the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE, taking over as Apple's cheapest smartphone. However, the final iPhone SE started at just $429, whereas the iPhone 16e starts at $599.
It's actually the second time that the iPhone SE has been discontinued. There was no iPhone SE in Apple's lineup from the time the first-generation model was discontinued in September 2018 until the second-generation model launched in April 2020.
Apple introduced the original iPhone SE in March 2016, as a lower-end, budget-conscious option. The device's design was based on the iPhone 5s. The second-generation and third-generation iPhone SE models followed in April 2020 and March 2022, respectively, with both of those devices having a design based on the iPhone 8.
The third-generation iPhone SE was the final iPhone model sold with a Home button, Touch ID, a Lightning port, a sub-6-inch screen size, and an LCD screen. There are also no more iPhones available in the (PRODUCT)RED color.
Apple also discontinued the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus last week.
The lineup now consists of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus.
