Two of Apple's Oldest Products Are Finally Getting Updated This Year

Apple released the HomePod mini in November 2020, followed by the AirTag in May 2021, and both still remain first-generation products.

Fortunately, rumors suggest that both the HomePod mini and the AirTag will finally be updated at some point this year.

Below, we recap rumors about the HomePod mini 2 and AirTag 2.

In January 2025, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple is aiming to launch the new HomePod mini "toward the end of the year." According to his reporting, the speaker will be equipped with Apple's own combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, with Wi-Fi 6E support. The current HomePod mini supports Wi-Fi 4, so Wi-Fi 6E would be an upgrade, enabling faster and more reliable Wi-Fi connectivity for Siri, music playback, and more.

While there are no other firm rumors yet, likely upgrades for the next HomePod mini include a newer "S" chip, improved sound quality, new color options, and a newer Ultra Wideband chip for a lower-latency Handoff experience. The current HomePod mini is equipped with the S5 chip, which debuted in 2019's Apple Watch Series 5.

In addition to a new HomePod mini, Apple reportedly plans to release an all-new smart home hub at some point this year. The hub is expected to feature around a 6-inch to 7-inch display that can be mounted on a wall, or attached to a tabletop base with a speaker, so the device could be similar to the HomePod mini in some ways.

The home hub is expected to support Apple Intelligence, but the next HomePod mini is not.

AirTag 2

In November 2024, Gurman said Apple was aiming to release a new AirTag around the middle of 2025. While he did not offer a more specific timeframe, that means the AirTag 2 could be announced by the end of June this year.

The original AirTag was announced during an Apple Event in April 2021, alongside the iMac with the M1 chip, an updated Apple TV 4K, and more.

Three new features have been rumored for the AirTag 2 so far:

  • With a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the AirTag 2 is expected to have up to 3× longer range compared to the current AirTag. The chip debuted in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. On the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, there is a Precision Finding for People feature that can help you to find your friends in crowded places, and it offers a range of up to 200 feet/60 meters.
  • The new AirTag's built-in speaker is expected to be more difficult to remove, as a stalking-related safety measure.
  • The new AirTag is rumored to have improved integration with the Apple Vision Pro, but there are no specific details about this.

Overall, the AirTag 2 is expected to look similar to the original AirTag.
