Personally, I'll hold to replace my Mid-2014 MBP until Apple has finally implemented Face-ID into these Mx MBA / MBPs. Why would it be so hard to add this feature anyway?
Some users, like me, do not want face ID. We prefer the intentional act of touching a sensor to approve biometric identification. More secure, by a lot. And it works 100% reliably for me with my 2016 MBP (as long as my finger is dry!).

Plus (also for security) many folks like me routinely keep the laptop camera blocked when not Zooming; some workplaces require it.

Isn't that the one with a single 256 GB SSD causing relatively low read/write speeds compared to for instance the Air M1 with 256 GB which does have two separate 128 GB SSDs? OTOH in daily use it was discovered it didn't matter but for people who require high data transfer speeds. Better buy the 512 GB version which does have two 256 GB SSDs and sports considerably higher dat transfer speeds. But that one isn't discounted.
I just got this base spec M2 a week ago and I already have a 14" MBP M1 Pro 16GB/1TB as my main machine.

There is no difference in performance for daily operations for email, web browsing, Apple Photos and all manner of MS Office task multitasking. I'm not going to edit 8k video with it, but for general purpose computing it is excellent.

M3 soon
That's a year or two away.

At some point people need to stop worrying what's around the corner and just buy a computer.

I think the "relatively low" SSD speeds has been way overemphasized and takes away from all the other great things about the M2 Macbook Air. The main reason I would go for 512 GB is for storage capacity rather than speed, because for my purposes, that would be more of an issue.
Was about to write something similar. I have this M2 with 256. Yeah benchmark says it's slower but for everyday use, it's fine. It should affect the most when you are transferring large file to/from your macbook, but hey, it's only 256gb so there's not much room to transfer anyway. :D
