Today marks Apple's second anniversary of the opening of its first retail store in May 2001. This press release reports that 57 Apple Stores have been opened and that 20 new stores are planned over the next 12 months.
Three more prominent locations were announced, including Apple's first international Apple Store in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district. The other high profile locations are downtown Chicago (June 27th, 2003) and San Francisco.
Rumors of international Apple Stores have floated around, including previous specifics about the Tokyo store - but this is the first official announcement by Apple that the Apple Stores will be built internationally.
