Ask Macrumors: Ghz Mac?

jay writes "i read that ibm has perfected a Ghz PowerPC chip to go on sale later this year, perhaps by fall, but since that article i have not seen anything about it!?! i am drooling to find out more info! what will be its exact clock speed and other specs, and, of course, cost?! i can't wait for this pentium/athlon smashing chip to be seen in an apple computer! "

MacUser UK reported about 600/700/800mhz chips this fall, and 1 Ghz chips not until 2001. What's exciting is the improved chip is rumored to be more than just a simple speed increase... with an extra altivec unit, decreased power consumption and increased cache.

Other than that, we haven't heard anything about PPC Ghz chips sooner.
