This technology appears to be closer to market than the SmartQuill.
Anoto has integrated a digital camera, processor and bluetooth transceiver into a pen for an interesting application. The Anoto Pen is a wireless Pen which records and transmits what you write. This data can then be transmitted, stored and manipulated.
You do have to use specially treated paper (with grid-system embedded)... but the potential is incredible. By offloading processing of the data to a centralized server - you don't bog down the Pen with trying to process all the data.
Mac support? Not sure... but let's hope.
