Apple is now accepting pre-orders for the new iPhone XR through its online storefront on the web and through its Apple Store app on iOS devices.

The 6.1-inch iPhone XR is the third iPhone in the 2018 iPhone lineup, and the most affordable of the new devices.

Rather than an OLED display, a dual-lens camera system, a stainless steel frame, 3D Touch, and Gigabit LTE, the iPhone XR features more affordable components that include an LCD display with a resolution of 1792x828, a single-lens camera system, lesser water resistance, an aluminum frame, Haptic Touch, and LTE Advanced.

iphonexrcolors2
On the plus side, the iPhone XR has a longer battery life than the iPhone XS and XS Max, and it comes in six colors: white, black, blue, coral, yellow, and (PRODUCT)RED. Design wise, it looks similar to the iPhone XS and XS Max with an edge-to-edge LCD display that includes a notch and a TrueDepth camera system, but its bezels are slightly wider.

The iPhone XR adopts the same Face ID functionality as the iPhone XS and XS Max, with Apple eliminating the Home button in all of its flagship iPhones in 2018. The iPhone XR also supports dual-SIM functionality like the iPhone XS, and it has the same super fast A12 chip.

It also features a glass body that supports wireless charging functionality, and through software enhancements, it supports many of the same camera features including Portrait Mode, Depth Control, and Smart HDR.

Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models will feature a USB-C port instead of a traditional Lightning port, according to information gathered from accessory makers at the Global Source Mobile Electronics Trade Fair by Japanese site Mac Otakara.

The trade fair kicked off today and Mac Otakara heard "talk" from manufacturers attending the event about a switch to USB-C.

This isn't the first time we've heard of Apple's plans to adopt USB-C instead of Lightning on its new iPad Pro models, which would further bridge the gap between mobile device and computer.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often accurately predicts Apple's plans, said in September that Apple's 2018 iPad Pro models will use USB-C instead of Lightning. USB-C connectivity would enable new functionality, such as the ability to connect an iPad Pro to a 4K monitor.

Mac Otakara also says that manufacturers at the event were showing off a photo of the 2018 iPad Pro dimensions that was first shared on Slashleaks last week.

That image, said to be based on measurements secured from case makers, suggested the smaller iPad Pro model will be 7 inches wide (178.52mm) and 9.7 inches tall (247.64mm), while the larger model will be 8.5 inches wide (215mm) and 11 inches tall (280.66mm). Both models could have bezels that measure in at 6mm around all sides, and at least one model may be as thin as 5.9mm.

Apple's new iPad Pro models are rumored to feature a TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and no Home button. The new devices are expected to make their debut on Tuesday, October 30, at an event Apple is planning to hold in Brooklyn, New York.

Payments company Square today announced the launch of a new point-of-sale hardware device called "Terminal," which combines NFC, credit/debit card swiping, and chip-based payments all in one piece of hardware. Like Square's other devices, Terminal supports Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other mobile wallets using near-field communication.

Square says Terminal can be used alongside an existing point-of-sale solution or as its own standalone payment processing system. Terminal also has an all-day battery, Wi-Fi and Ethernet internet connections, an offline mode, quick setup, fraud prevention, and is fully mobile so it can be used on a countertop or taken directly to customers. In terms of pricing, businesses will have to pay one transaction rate of 2.6% + 10¢ for every payment, and Square promises no hidden fees.

“We love how the hardware, payments, and printer are all part of one device,” said Fabrice Borg, manager of Prive by Laurent D Salon in New York, NY. “Square Terminal makes for a more seamless and professional experience when we bring the terminal to our customers and they can pay for their services right from the salon chair.”

Square first launched its original NFC reader back in November 2015, allowing any business to introduce Apple Pay support to their checkout process. Over the years the company expanded into the United Kingdom, introduced new point-of-sale devices like the Square Register, and updated the swipe-based Square Reader with a Lightning connector.

Those interested can purchase Terminal in the Square Shop for $399, or pay $37 per month for 12 months.

The iPhone XR will be available for pre-order at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time on October 19, and ahead of when pre-orders go live, the first iPhone XR reviews have been published on YouTube.

Apple appears to have provided several YouTubers and media sites with iPhone XR review units, with a list of some of the available review videos embedded below.

Apple's iPhone XR is the third iPhone in Apple's 2018 iPhone lineup. It's the least expensive of the three new devices, priced starting at $749 vs. $999 and $1,099 for the iPhone XS and XS Max.

Compared to the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR features an LCD display instead of an OLED display, Haptic Touch instead of 3D Touch, and an aluminum frame instead of a stainless steel frame. It's got a lower water resistance rating at IP67, and it has slower LTE Advanced instead of Gigabit LTE.

Most notably, the iPhone XR uses a single-lens camera system instead of a dual-lens camera system, but the two devices feature many of the same capabilities such as Depth Control and Smart HDR, enabled through software.

Aside from these differences, the iPhone XR and iPhone XS have the same components including the super fast A12 chip, TrueDepth camera system for Face ID, and glass body for wireless charging capabilities.

The iPhone XR will officially launch on Friday, October 26, one week after pre-orders take place.

Apple today sent out invites for an upcoming October 30th event set to be held in Brooklyn. Apple did something special for its invites this time around, and each one features unique artwork with a different Apple logo.

Apple also designed a new event page for the event, and each time you reload the page, you can see a new Apple logo that Apple created.

applelogos2
It's not clear how many different Apple logos Apple designed for the event, but it appears to be at least several dozen. You can see a selection of approximately 10 of them by refreshing the event page, but not all of the artwork that showed up on the invites appears to be on the page.

Apple's event, which will focus on the iPad Pro and its Mac lineup, is set to take place on Tuesday, October 30 in New York City at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn. It is Apple's first NYC event in several years.

Rather than starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, Apple's October event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time, or 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time because the event is taking place on the East Coast instead of the West Coast.

According to the event page, Apple will live stream its New York event. You will be able to watch through the Events app on the Apple TV or on Apple's website through the Events page.

While the iPad Pro is expected to continue to use an LCD rather than OLED due to the high price of OLED displays, rumors suggest it could adopt a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port and that the headphone jack could potentially be eliminated.

Along with new iPad Pro models, we're also expecting refreshes to the MacBook line. Refreshed 12-inch MacBooks are said to be in the works, and based on rumors, Apple has developed a low-cost notebook with a Retina display that could be positioned as an updated MacBook Air.

The Mac mini, which has not been updated for more than 1,400 days, is expected to be refreshed for the first time since 2014. We don't know a lot about what to expect for the Mac mini update, but upgraded internals and faster processors are a sure thing.

It's possible that at this iPad and Mac-focused event, we'll also hear more about the modular Mac Pro that Apple is working on for a 2019 debut.

Apple's 2018 keynote event will begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Apple typically streams the event live on its website and on Apple TV, but for those who are unable to watch, MacRumors will be providing full event coverage both on MacRumors.com and through our MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Startup Beddr today launched the "SleepTuner," the first FDA-registered consumer sleep wearable that helps to assess and improve sleep quality. SleepTuner is a small accessory (about the size of a postage stamp) with Bluetooth Low Energy that attaches to your forehead to measure sleep duration, track heart rate, optimize nighttime breathing, and improve oxygenation, all viewable when synced to the compatible iOS app.

beddr naptime
Specifically, SleepTuner was built to help accurately measure oxygen and breathing overnight in order to determine if the user suffers from sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Beddr says that its tracker includes "the essentials of a traditional sleep lab" to measure blood oxygen levels, heart rate, sleep position, and stopped breathing events.

To use, SleepTuner is attached to the forehead by a hypoallergenic disposable adhesive, which the company says avoids the pitfalls of rival options that have numerous wires and other attachments. The device has a 50 mAh battery that provides up to 20 hours of continuous test time, and is rechargeable. SleepTuner has optical sensors and a 3-axis accelerometer to gather sleep data, which is saved in the Beddr Cloud until the user syncs it with the iOS app in the morning.

beddr app
Once synced, the app gathers data from SleepTuner over the course of its use, providing users with helpful insights like determining their optimal sleeping position, overall sleep quality, pointing out how often they wake up, highlighting night-to-night improvements, and more.

Beddr compares SleepTuner to a few other sleep-tracking capable products on its website, including Apple Watch Series 4 and Beddit:

SleepTuner is available to pre-order on Beddr's website for $149, including the sensor, 12 adhesive strips, a charging cable, and a protective case. The device will begin shipping next month.

In iOS 12, Apple added several new ways for users to control how and when they receive app notifications, including the ability to group notifications and change their behavior on the fly with Instant Tuning. A lesser known feature in this subset of options is called Critical Alerts. So what are they exactly?

criticalalert1
The idea behind Critical Alerts is that if specific apps have crucial information that shouldn't be ignored – notifications related to health, home security, or public safety, for example – then you'll be alerted regardless of your other device settings.

critical alertTo that end, Critical Alerts override the Do Not Disturb feature if you have it enabled on your iPhone or iPad, and will even arrive with an audio alert when your device is muted.

Naturally, the Critical Alerts feature is going to have limited use – you'd only want appropriate apps to have access to it (think glucose monitoring or weather warning apps) which is why Apple requires that developers apply for an entitlement to support them.

For that reason, there aren't a whole lot of apps that support these alerts just yet, but if you do come across one that advertises Critical Alerts, you still get to choose whether to enable them or not. Here's how.

How to Disable or Enable Critical Alerts in iOS 12

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Select the app from the list that you want to enable/disable Critical Alerts for.
  4. Toggle the Critical Alerts switch on/off.

Popular image editing app Pixelmator Pro was today updated to version 1.2, which adds full support for macOS Mojave, a new light mode, faster machine learning tools, and more.

The update introduces compatibility for Continuity Camera and Quick Actions, two macOS Mojave features. Continuity Camera support is designed to let you import a photo into Pixelmator Pro directly from an iPhone, while Quick Actions let you edit images using Finder.

pixelmatorprobatchprocessing
Batch processing functionality has been added to Automator for white balance, auto enhance, color adjustments, effects, and file conversions, and Automator is what powers the new Quick Actions you'll find in Finder. There are also tools for creating your own Pixelmator Pro Quick Actions that can be executed without opening the Pixelmator app.

macOS Mojave brought Core ML 2, which is now powering Pixelmator Pro features like Auto Layer Naming, ML Color Adjustments, ML Hue & Saturation, ML White Balance, ML Lightness, and a new ML Enhance feature that's designed to let Apple's neural network analyze and improve the colors of an image in just a few seconds.

ML Enhance is an auto enhance feature that was trained on 20 million professional photos, which lets it tweak 37 color adjustments all at once for the best possible automatic color tuning.

pixelmatorpromlenhance
The updated version of Pixelmator Pro includes a new light appearance and a revamped dark appearance, both of which are designed to work with the Light Mode and Dark Mode in macOS Mojave. Pixelmator Pro will automatically activate one of these modes based on your macOS settings.

SVG fonts are also supported in Pixelmator Pro 1.2, and several bug fixes have been included.

Pixelmator Pro 1.2 can be downloaded from the App Store for $29.99, a 50 percent discount off of the regular Pixelmator Pro price. Customers who have already purchased Pixelmator Pro will get the update for free. [Direct Link]

Spotify has announced a major update to its mobile apps for users with a Premium subscription to the service, including an overhauled radio feature and changes to the onscreen navigation controls and search functions.

premium spotify
Paying Spotify users can now search an artist and song to generate a unique radio station that can be saved for offline listening.

Like the service's Discover Weekly and other user-tailored playlists, Spotify says the endlessly playing radio streams are personalized to the user's own musical tastes.

But unlike the old radio stations, the new Artist Radio playlists don't have thumbs up/thumbs down buttons as they rely more heavily on Spotify's personal listening algorithms, and Spotify says they will be regularly updated to keep things fresh.

As for the other changes, the navigation controls at the bottom of the interface now consist of Home, Search, and Your Library. While Home is where recommendations live, the redesigned Search screen opens with Top Genres at the top and Browse All buttons below.

Spotify says users can also expect a better song search experience, with the app now able to generate unique playlists based around searched songs, rather than just returning a list of tracks with the same name.

The mobile app update is a global update rolling out today to all premium subscribers on both iOS and Android devices.

Mophie today announced the launch of the new Powerstation USB-C 3XL, which has been designed to charge Apple's line of MacBook devices.

The fabric-covered Powerstation USB-C 3XL includes a 26,000mAh battery that Mophie says is able to provide a 12-inch MacBook with up to 18 hours of additional battery life. It is Mophie's largest Powerstation to date.

mophiepowerstation
Though designed to charge the MacBook at full speed, the 45W Powerstation USB-C 3XL can be used to provide a little additional juice for the more powerful MacBook Pro models. Battery life won't go quite as far, though, nor will charging be as fast.

The Powerstation USB-C 3XL can also be used to fast charge an iPhone 8 or later with a USB-C to Lightning cable, and there is a built-in USB-A port for charging iOS devices and other accessories with a traditional USB-A to Lightning cable.

Mophie says the new Powerstation USB-C 3XL features Priority+ Charging that's designed to send power to connected devices before charging the Powerstation when it's plugged into a power source.

Mophie's new Powerstation USB-C 3XL can be purchased from the Mophie website, from the Apple online store, or from Apple retail stores starting today, with the device priced at $199.95.

On our MacRumors YouTube channel, we have an ongoing video series that's designed to highlight new, interesting, and useful iOS apps that we think are worth downloading and checking out.

There are so many apps in the iOS App Store that it can be hard to find new apps and it's also easy to overlook great apps that are a bit older. Our app lists include both new and old apps that we recommend and have personally tested out.

  • Grimvalor ($5.99) - We like to include at least one game in our iOS app roundups, and this month's recommendation is Grimvalor, from the team that developed popular game Swordigo. GrimValor is a traditional hack n' slash platformer with solid virtual controls, great graphics, and plenty of content to get through. As with most games of this type, the idea is to fight monsters, explore dungeons, and gather loot to progress through the story. Grimvalor costs $5.99, and there are no additional in-app purchases.
  • Habitica (Free) - Habitica is an app that uses gamification to motivate you to adhere to desired habits and reach goals by letting you level up a character by accomplishing a series of user-defined tasks. It's basically a to-do list that comes with a custom avatar that levels up as you finish what you're working on. You can fight monsters, unlock armor, pets, and skills, and complete quests by meeting your goals. Habitica is free to download, but there are optional in-app subscriptions for unlocking features.
  • Sorted (Free) - Sorted is a task management app that's designed to let you schedule events, tasks, and notes into a timeline, with a built-in feature that creates a full daily schedule for you. Sorted has flexible controls for scheduling, with options for folders, lists, and tags for organization. Sorted is free to download, but unlocking all of its features costs $14.99.
  • Sip (Free) - Sip News, an app from Product Hunt, is designed to deliver news in an easily digestible format. You see one news headline at a time in the app, and you can tap on either side of the screen to scroll through the relevant details of the story. • Entale (Free) - Entale is a unique podcasts app that's designed to pull you further into audio stories by adding pictures, links, quotes, and more to a medium that's traditionally limited to the spoken word.
