Adobe today announced the launch of Fresco, its new painting and drawing app designed for the iPad.

Adobe Fresco (formerly Project Gemini) is designed to allow artists to create professional quality drawings, but the interface has been created with simplicity in mind so anyone can use it.

adobefresco
Adobe Fresco features infinitely scalable vector brushes, adaptable Photoshop brushes, and Live Brushes that are powered by Adobe's machine learning and artificial intelligence engine, Adobe Sensei.

The Adobe Sensei-powered brushes are meant to recreate the experience of painting with oils or watercolors right on the display of the ‌iPad‌, so it's like painting with real-life materials.

frescoart1
There are thousands of brushes to play with in Adobe Fresco, and Adobe has built in intuitive tools for selections, masking, and more.

Adobe's blog has a series of examples of the kids of artwork that can be created using Fresco's range of brushes, including oil brushes, watercolor brushes, photoshop brushes mimicking crayons, ink pens, foliage, acrylic paint and tons more, and vector brushes for creating infinitely scaleable art.

Adobe says that in celebration of the 2019 Big Draw Festival, Apple retail stores are offering free art sessions where participants can try Fresco for themselves and take part in fun drawing activities.

frescoart2
Adobe Fresco creations are compatible with Photoshop, which means files can be transferred back and forth seamlessly between Fresco and Photoshop, plus for Creative Cloud subscribers, all files, brushes, colors, and content libraries are integrated.

Creative Cloud users can download Fresco for free, and it is included in all Adobe Creative Cloud plans and the Adobe Photoshop-only plan, but it is not included in the CC Photography Plan that includes Photoshop and Lightroom.

A freemium version of Adobe Fresco is available for non-Creative Cloud users with many of the same features, but access to brushes is limited and high-resolution files can't be exported.

A standalone $9.99 per month plan is available for those who don't have a Creative Cloud subscription but want to unlock all of the Adobe Fresco features. More information is available on Adobe's website.

Kik Messenger CEO Ted Livingston has announced that the iOS and Android messaging service will be shut down. The decision to shutter Kik was made not because the app receives poor engagement or user downloads, but because the company is in the midst of a legal battle with the SEC over its "Kin" cryptocurrency.

kik
In a blog post, Livingston explained that at this point Kik is one of the largest apps in the United States, with industry leading engagement amid a recent growth period over the past few months. Nevertheless, the team has decided to shut down Kik, reduce the company from over 100 employees to just 19, and focus on converting more users into Kin buyers.

Livingston said that no matter what happens to Kik, the Kin cryptocurrency is "here to stay."

While we are ready to take on the SEC in court, we underestimated the tactics they would employ. How they would take our quotes out of context to manipulate the public to view us as bad actors. How they would pressure exchanges not to list Kin. And how they would draw out a long and expensive process to drain our resources.

Together these changes will drop our burn rate by eighty five percent, putting us in position to get through the SEC trial with the resources we have.

Kik Messenger provides users with a way to connect to friends and family through text messaging, group chats, and video chats. The app doesn't require users to enter a phone number or connect it to a social network platform, so it was appealing to users interested in anonymity, letting them sign up with any name and an email address.

It's unclear exactly when the company plans to shut down Kik for good.

Last year, Apple announced the launch of a $300 million Clean Energy Fund in China to connect suppliers with renewable energy sources.

China Clean Energy Fund Wind Farms Apple
Apple and 10 of its suppliers in China will invest nearly $300 million by 2022 to develop projects totaling one gigawatt of renewable energy. In a press release today, Apple said that includes three wind firms in Hunan and Hubei that will generate approximately one-tenth of that anticipated total.

Each farm is said to generate 48 megawatts of clean energy, supplying a combined 134 megawatts to China's national power grid.

Apple's environmental chief Lisa Jackson:

To see these projects completed and already supplying clean energy to the grid is really exciting. We are proud that suppliers participating in the fund share our commitment to supporting innovative energy solutions, cutting emissions and fighting climate change.

In its press release, Apple also reiterated that 44 of its suppliers in 16 countries have committed to using 100 percent clean energy to power their Apple-specific production. Apple and its suppliers remain on track to generate more than four gigawatts of clean energy worldwide by 2020, the company said.

Apple's Macs and iPads had the highest customer satisfaction score among PC and tablet makers in 2019, according to new data released today by the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

In the 2019 Household Appliance and Electronics Report, Apple earned an ACSI score of 83, the same score that it had in 2018. Apple's overall satisfaction score was higher than scores from Samsung (81), Amazon (79), HP (78), Acer (77), and others.

acsiapple

In the overall industry rankings, Apple stays on top for a second year with a stable and high ACSI score of 83, and its customers have by far the highest expectations. Despite a 1% downturn, Samsung keeps second place at 81 and no longer ties with Amazon, which falls much further. Amazon tumbles 4% to 79, just a point above the industry average. Among the three leaders, Apple demonstrates an advantage across all aspects of the customer experience, but it still lags both Samsung and Amazon for value.

The ACSI says that Samsung is the "industry leader" when it comes to the desktop segment with Apple in second place, but Apple devices win out when it comes to laptops and tablets, earning it the top overall score.

As with last year, Apple earned best-in-class ratings for everything from device design to features and available apps. Apple, says ACSI, demonstrates an advantage "across all aspects of the customer experience."

When it comes to overall customer satisfaction, desktop PCs, notebooks, and tablets still lag behind overall smartphone satisfaction, but amid larger machines, desktop computers have higher levels of customer satisfaction.

To create its scoring system and compile device scores, the ACSI uses data from interviews with approximately 300,000 customers to analyze customer satisfaction with hundreds of companies across dozens of industries.

Apple Arcade on Tuesday began appearing on Apple TVs running the latest tvOS 13 beta GM build, following the official launch of the gaming subscription service last week in tandem with the release of iOS 13.

apple arcade devices
Beta testers and developers took to Twitter to share the news in the early hours of this morning, although it's still unclear whether the gaming service is rolling out to all Apple set-top boxes running the Golden Master candidate, or just those in certain locations.

As the image below demonstrates, ‌Apple Arcade‌ on Apple TV features a native interface optimized for television screens, and currently sports a 'Try it Free' button promoting the service's one-month free trial available to everyone.

Games on ‌Apple Arcade‌ are supported by Made for iPhone game controllers along with PS4 and Xbox controllers, and Apple has built controller support into tvOS 13, so users won't need to rely on the Apple Remote to get playing.

The service's launch on tvOS is also hotly anticipated because ‌Apple Arcade‌ supports multiple platforms, so you'll be able to start a game on, say, your ‌iPhone‌, and then swap over to ‌Apple TV‌ without losing your place.

When ‌Apple Arcade‌ first became available, there were just over 50 games available, but more titles have already been rolling out. Apple says that new ‌Apple Arcade‌ titles will be coming out on a weekly basis, with at least 100 games in the works.

‌Apple Arcade‌ is priced at $4.99 per month, and allows up to six family members to access games through Apple's Family Sharing feature. It's currently only available on ‌iPhone‌, but will officially roll out to iPad and ‌Apple TV‌ when the public releases of iPadOS and tvOS 13 arrive on Tuesday, September 24. A Mac launch is likely to arrive in October. For more information, check out our dedicated Apple Arcade guide.

Apple Music has gained a new video page called "Lyrics to Live By" featuring interviews with popular artists, following the launch of its time-synced lyrics feature last week (via Billboard).

apple music lyrics to live by
Part of iOS 13, which was released last week, real-time lyrics lets ‌Apple Music‌ listeners view song lyrics in a karaoke-style while songs are playing, and the new dedicated page serves to showcase the new feature.

According to the page's description, "Lyrics to Live By" is intended to "celebrate this new frontier in the listening experience."

"Whether it's today's biggest artists telling the personal stories behind the indelible lines that double as invaluable life advice, or robust playlists showcasing the sharpest lyricists in the history of music, you'll have a whole new appreciation for that your favorite artists are saying, not just how they're saying it."

The page also includes a "Modern Masters" playlist series with songbooks from a variety of artists, including Jack Antonoff, Benny Blanco, Brody Brown, J Kash, Bonnie McKee, Julia Michaels, Victoria Monet, Ed Sheeran, Sia, Chris Stapleton, Starrah and Ryan Tedder.

Lastly, further down the page there's a section called "Songwriting Gods and Goddesses" highlighting selections from ‌Apple Music‌'s "Essentials" playlists.

Update: In a statement, AVID has indicated that the root cause for the reboot issue is unrelated to its creative tools. Google has since confirmed that a Chrome update "may have shipped with a bug that damages the file system on macOS machines" and has provided instructions for affected users.

Original story follows.

2013 mac proVariety reports this morning of a possible computer virus attack or critical software failure affecting Mac Pro workstations across Los Angeles.

According to social media chatter, Hollywood Film and TV editors discovered late on Monday that "trashcan" Mac Pros running older versions of macOS and AVID's Media Composer software were refusing to reboot after shutting down.

The root cause of the issue remains unknown, but online speculation is surfacing a few possibilities, including a virus specifically targeting post-production Macs in the Hollywood area.

Others have suggested an issue with AVID's iLok activation dongle, or perhaps a conflict with the software and a recent system update – possibly related to Apple's Safari browser – that is corrupting data.

Affected users are being advised to try booting in single-user mode and disabling Wi-Fi so that they can back up, while non-affected AVID users have been told not to shut down their Macs so they can also deactivate Wi-Fi and any other networks until a solution is found.

Several companies are said to have been affected by the issue. Neither AVID nor Apple have responded to requests for comment. This is a developing story that will be updated as soon as we learn more.

Apple last Friday released the Apple Watch Series 5, the newest iteration of the Apple Watch that first debuted in 2015. The Apple Watch Series 5 isn't much different from the Series 4, but there are some notable changes.

In our latest YouTube video, we went hands-on with the Apple Watch Series 5 to check out what's new.

Design wise, the Apple Watch Series 5 is identical to the Apple Watch Series 4, featuring the same larger display over the Series 3 and 40 and 44mm case size options. There are two new materials this year, though.2017

Titanium, a never before used material, is lighter and more durable than stainless steel, and $100 more expensive, starting at $799 (stainless steel models start at $699). Also new this year is ceramic ($1299), which we had in 2016 and 2017 but wasn't an option in 2018. Ceramic and titanium Apple Watch models are considered higher-end "Edition" models.

Apple is still offering the standard stainless steel and aluminum, which starts at $399. As with last year, there are GPS only models and GPS + LTE models.

Aside from new case materials, the other major change to the Series 5 lineup is an Always-On display feature. As the name suggests, the display of the Series 5 Apple Watch is always lit up so you can glance down at your wrist to see the time, your complications, your notifications, or, with the Workout app running, your exercise metrics.

The display does dim when not in use, of course, but the watch face is clearly visible without the need to raise your wrist up.

There were no processor changes in the Series 5, so though Apple says it uses an S5 chip, the processor is identical to the Series 4. Display improvements, a low power display driver, and an efficient power management integrated circuit enable the Always-On display.

Apple says that battery life on the Series 5 should last for up to 18 hours just like the Series 4 despite the Always-On display, but we've seen some mixed results.

Some of us here at MacRumors haven't seen battery life changes, but others feel that the battery is draining quicker than before. Apple may have some optimizations coming in future software updates to solve any battery issues.

Other new changes include 32GB of internal storage, likely for the new standalone App Store in watchOS 6, and a new compass feature. The compass feature is available in a Compass app that tells you your heading, incline, latitude, and longitude, plus the feature is used in the Maps app so you can finally see which direction you're facing.

For LTE Apple Watch owners, there's an updated Emergency SOS feature that will contact emergency services in whatever country you're in when activated, something that's nice for peace of mind when traveling. In prior models, this feature was limited to the emergency services in the country of purchase.

All in all, while there are some useful features in the Series 5, there's not a compelling reason to update if you already have a Series 4. If you have a Series 1, 2, 3, or original Apple Watch, there's a lot more to gain in the Series 5 and it's potentially a worthwhile upgrade.

Apple recently added the second-generation Apple Pencil to its online store for refurbished products in the United States, offering the accessory at a discounted price for the first time.

Apple is selling the second-generation Apple Pencil for $109, which is a $20 discount off of the original $129 price. $109 is the lowest price that we've seen on the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2, so Apple's deal is solid for anyone looking to pick up a new ‌Apple Pencil‌.

refurbishedapplepenci
The ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2 is compatible with the 2018 11-inch iPad Pro and the 2018 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ only. All other iPad models that support the ‌Apple Pencil‌ work with the original ‌Apple Pencil‌, not the second-generation version.

Next-generation ‌iPad Pro‌ models that are in development will also likely be compatible with ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2.

Compared to the original ‌Apple Pencil‌, the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2 does away with the Lightning port at the top of the device, instead charging wirelessly via the ‌iPad Pro‌ itself through a magnetic connection.

The second-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌ also supports gestures, so with a tap, you can change brushes or quickly switch from a brush to an eraser without having to pick up the pencil and select a new tool.

Apple today updated its TestFlight app to version 2.5.0, adding support for new iOS 13 features. TestFlight is an app that developers use to allow people to beta test their apps ahead of release.

The updated version of TestFlight features support for Dark Mode for the first time, allowing users who have ‌Dark Mode‌ enabled in iOS 13 to see a dark view of TestFlight rather than the standard light mode.

testflightnightmode
iOS 13 is required for the ‌Dark Mode‌ to be activated, and it will turn on whenever the overall iOS ‌Dark Mode‌ is setting is on - there's no separate toggle.

Apple says that the TestFlight update also includes stability improvements and bug fixes.

Twitter today implemented a feature that's designed to allow lists of Twitter users to be pinned to the Home screen and swiped between, allowing for easy access to multiple customizable timelines.

Twitter users are now able to add five lists to the Twitter app, swiping between them on the Home screen.

twitterlists
With this new feature, Twitter users can do things like group coworkers, friends, and family into different lists, and then with a swipe, view just tweets from each individual list.

Lists have long been used as alternative timelines by Twitter users, allowing people to follow accounts without having to add them to the main Twitter timeline, but the new feature makes it easier to do so.

As Engadget points out, this is a feature that Twitter has been testing since the summer and has finally rolled out to all users.

Twitter has also changed the design of list pages, introducing header images and making it easier to see list members and who is subscribed to a given list. Lists can still be private or public, and there's still an option to follow public lists from other users.

Apple today seeded the ninth beta of macOS 10.15 Catalina to developers, two weeks after seeding the eighth macOS Catalina beta and over three months after the new Mac operating system update was first unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

The new macOS Catalina beta can be downloaded using the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences after installing the proper software from the Developer Center.

test macOS 10
macOS Catalina eliminates the iTunes app, splitting it into Music, Podcasts, and TV apps. The three new apps offer similar functionality to iTunes, but are split up by feature. iOS device management is still available on the Mac, but it's now done through the Finder rather than iTunes.

With a new Sidecar feature, you can turn your iPad into a second display for your Mac with just the click of a button. The Apple Pencil works with ‌Sidecar‌, so you can turn your ‌iPad‌ into a drawing tablet in apps like Photoshop and Illustrator.

Your Apple Watch can be used to approve security prompts for passwords and other info in macOS Catalina, and Macs with a T2 chip now support Activation Lock, making them more secure. There's a new Find My that brings the ‌Find My‌ Mac app to the Mac for the first time and even lets you track your devices when they're offline, or, in the case of notebooks, closed.

Screen Time is available on the Mac as well as iOS devices, and Project Catalyst, a new Apple initiative, will let developers easily port their ‌iPad‌ apps over to the Mac to increase the number of Mac apps available.

There's a new Photos interface that surfaces your best photos organized by day, month, or year, there's a new start page in Safari, Mail has new tools for muting email threads and blocking senders, and the Reminders app has been overhauled.

32-bit apps no longer work in macOS Catalina, which is something to be aware of before installing the beta.

For more details on macOS Catalina, make sure to check out our macOS Catalina roundup. Apple is planning to release macOS Catalina sometime in October, with no specific launch date announced as of yet.

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming watchOS 6.1 beta to developers, a little under a week after releasing the watchOS 6 update with full App Store, new Apple Watch faces, and more.

Once the proper configuration profile has been installed from the Apple Developer Center, the new watchOS beta can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General > Software Update.

applewatchseries5
To install the update, the Apple Watch needs to have at least 50 percent battery, it must be placed on the charger, and it has to be in range of the ‌iPhone‌.

It's not yet clear what features will be introduced in the watchOS 6.1 update, but we'll be updating this article when we find out.

Google today announced the launch of a new gaming service called Google Play Pass, which gives Android users access to more than 350 games and apps for $4.99 per month, similar to Apple Arcade.

Google's version, like ‌Apple Arcade‌, provides games to customers without in-app purchases and without ads. There is a family sharing option, and a Play Pass subscription can be shared with up to five family members.

Google's service is not limited to just games, and it includes titles that are already released, such as Stardew Valley, Terraria, Monument Valley, Knights of the Old Republic, Facetune, and AccuWeather. Google's offerings are also not exclusive, which is one of the key features of ‌Apple Arcade‌.

With ‌Apple Arcade‌, all of the game titles are only on the App Store when it comes to mobile devices, but some are also developed for release on console. ‌Apple Arcade‌ is also limited to new content and doesn't include popular older apps like Play Pass.

Given that Google is using existing games in Play Pass, it has a larger catalog of available titles at launch - hundreds, compared to Apple's 60+. Google says customers can count on new titles monthly, which is something Apple has also promised.

According to The Verge, Google plans to pay developers through user engagement with the apps, though it's not entirely clear what that means at this time. Google said that it's more than just screen time or number of app opens per week.

Google has been working on the Play Pass service since 2018, and began testing it out at the end of July.

Play Pass is available for Android devices in the United States this week, and will be expanding to additional countries soon. It comes with a 10-day free trial and after that, a subscription costs $4.99 per month, just like ‌Apple Arcade‌.

Google is offering a promo, though, which will allow subscribers to sign up for $1.99 per month for the first year for a limited time. Play Pass content can be accessed through the new Play Pass option that you can get to by tapping the menu in the top left corner of the Play Store.

The headline feature of Apple's 2019 iPhones is undoubtedly the new camera system, with the more affordable iPhone 11 boasting the same high-quality lenses as the ‌iPhone‌ 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, with the exception of the third telephoto lens that's exclusive to the Pro models.

iphone 11 and 11 pro no background
The standard wide camera on the ‌iPhone‌ 11 series offers the same 12 megapixels and f/1.8 aperture as on last year's ‌iPhone‌ XS devices, while the new 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera gets a f/2.4 lens. Apple has also widened the aperture of the telephoto lens on the Pro models to f/2.0 – an improvement over the f/2.4 lens found in the ‌iPhone‌ X and XS – which allows more light to hit the sensor and grab more detail.

Lens-Based Camera App Changes

Apple has also re-designed the camera system from the ground up to make the lenses work seamlessly in concert, and also radically improved the image processing technology. To accommodate these more advanced capabilities, Apple has given the stock Camera app a complete overhaul exclusively for its ‌iPhone‌ 11 series devices.

For example, when you shoot with the standard wide lens as shown above, the camera app interface becomes semi-transparent to reveal the ultra-wide camera's larger field of view, giving you a preview of what shooting with it would look like.

This immersive preview isn't limited to the wide and ultra-wide either: When using the telephoto lens on Pro devices, the Camera app will use the standard wide lens to fill in the additional area of the screen, as shown in the screenshot below. There's even an optional new camera feature that recruits the additional lenses and allows you to fix photo composition in post without having to resort to cropping.

Switching Between Ultra-Wide, Wide, and Telephoto

You can choose between the different lenses by tapping the numbered buttons at the bottom of the viewfinder: .5 is the new ultra-wide lens, 1x is the standard wide lens, and 2 is the telephoto lens (‌iPhone‌ 11 Pro and Pro Max only).

At first glance, it looks as if these lens modes are fixed options. Far from it: If you swipe up on one of the buttons you'll see a radial zoom wheel enabling you to find a transition from camera to camera through a series of fine gradations.

Along the wheel you'll also see the 35mm equivalent focal length of each lens-sensor combination (the focal length you would need for a 35 mm film camera to obtain the same angle of view). The wheel disappears once you've chosen a custom focal length, and if you decide you want to return to the standard focal length, you can simply tap the center lens button.

Apple today announced that its next-generation Mac Pro will be manufactured in Texas, with production slated to begin soon at the same Austin facility where the current ‌Mac Pro‌ has been made since 2013.

2019 mac pro side and front
Apple says the new ‌Mac Pro‌ will include components designed, developed, and manufactured by more than a dozen American companies for distribution to U.S. customers. Suppliers will span eight states, including Arizona, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Vermont.

Apple did not immediately respond when we asked if the new ‌Mac Pro‌ will be made in Texas for orders distributed in other countries.

Apple says the U.S. manufacturing is made possible following import tariff exemptions the Trump administration granted Apple last week for certain Chinese-made components. The value of American-made components in the new ‌Mac Pro‌ is 2.5 times greater than the current ‌Mac Pro‌, the company adds.

macprointernalsnomodules
Apple CEO Tim Cook:

The Mac Pro is Apple's most powerful computer ever and we're proud to be building it in Austin. We thank the administration for their support enabling this opportunity. We believe deeply in the power of American innovation. That's why every Apple product is designed and engineered in the US, and made up of parts from 36 states, supporting 450,000 jobs with US suppliers, and we're going to continue growing here.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott:

Apple's latest investment is a testament to Texas' unrivaled workforce and premier business climate. Our state's economy is thriving as the tech and manufacturing sectors continue to expand. I am grateful for Apple's commitment to creating jobs in Texas, and will continue to promote fiscal and regulatory policies that encourage investment in our state and benefit future generations of Texans.

Apple says it remains on track to fulfill its commitment to invest $350 billion in the U.S. economy by 2023. Apple said that, last year alone, it spent over $60 billion with more than 9,000 domestic suppliers across the country, including at manufacturing locations spanning 36 states.

Following a teardown of the iPhone 11 Pro Max on Friday, iFixit today posted a separate teardown of the entry-level iPhone 11 model.

ifixit 11 teardown
The repair site reiterated what has been said previously about the ‌iPhone‌ 11: it's essentially an ‌iPhone‌ XR, but with a few internal upgrades from the new ‌iPhone‌ 11 Pro family. There's a double-decker logic board, upgraded wide and ultrawide camera lenses, and what iFixit believes to be ultra wideband antenna technology embedded into the rear case.

Otherwise, the teardown doesn't reveal much unknown information about the ‌iPhone‌ 11. iFixit delved into the device's rectangular battery, which is only marginally improved upon last year's ‌iPhone‌ XR battery. The ‌iPhone‌ 11 has a 3,110 mAh battery, measuring about 7 percent more compared to the ‌iPhone‌ XR and accounting for the one hour battery increase that Apple claimed in its keynote.

ifixit iphone 11
iFixit also briefly discussed the potential for bilateral charging on the ‌iPhone‌ 11, which the site ultimately pointed out was never meant to be on the entry-level 2019 ‌iPhone‌. The ‌iPhone‌ 11 lacks a second battery connector (unlike the 11 Pro Max), and iFixit explained that a larger battery and additional thermal management "would almost certainly be required" for bilateral charging on the ‌iPhone‌ 11.

The ‌iPhone‌ 11 earned a repairability score of 6 out of 10. iFixit said that the display is easier to replace than in other smartphones, but the site bemoaned Apple's continued use of proprietary screws and an increased chance of breakage due to glass on the front and back of the ‌iPhone‌ 11.
