Despite the posting of a statement about not servicing unlocked iPhones at Apple Stores, TUAW reports that some individuals have been able to get their non-functional iPhones restored.

Apple continues posting warning signs around their stores, cautioning customers that unlocked and modded iPhones fall outside their warranty. And at the same time, Apple Geniuses around the country quietly are reportedly accepting bricked iphones, slipping into the back and returning with functioning units.

"Brick" is a term that refers to having an iPhone in an unusable state. In some instances, SIM unlocked iPhones that have been upgraded to the latest firmware can end up in an unusable state.
